I just bought a '89 SHO, and I noticed that when starting out in 1st it makes what sounds like grinding, but I don't feel grinding and the car moves fine. It only makes this sound at lower RPM's and pretty much disappears by 2k.

It also does it on 2nd, the same sound, but only at low RPMs. The car shifts fine and drives smoothly.

I'm just wondering if this sound is normal for a SHO. Or does it need some fluids?

Its not normal at all, does it go away if its grinding and you push on the clutch a bit?

Yea I hear it in reverse. It isn't grinding I know that, it just sounds like it but the sound goes away once I get past 2k. It drives smoothly and shifts well, I just don't know what that sound is about.

thats the money detector option. it clandestinely checks the contents of your wallet then breaks something equal to about twice what it finds.

grinding noises aren't good, better sharpen your hearing skills and try to isolate the noise.

I was listening a bit more on the way home and I hear it in every gear. Starts at the same RPM range and ends at the same 2k mark. It can't be all the gears, so it might be something else, diff? I cannot afford for another broken car right now. I just spent the money that would have fixed my old car to buy this one....

Would the lack of fluids cause something like this? I have no idea on what it has had done on the transmission...it could all be the original fluids for all I know.

I know what you are talking about...I'm pretty sure that I've heard it called "gear roll-over".
All my MTX SHOs (4) made/make a bit of noise under low RPM load. It's louder on my silver car, and I have been meaning to flush/fill the trans. I think it's low on fluid.

Okay then that definitely makes more sense. The previous owner never flushed the transmission fluids....ever, and it has been getting harder and harder to get into gear lately. I think I'm going to change the fluids today or tomorrow.

Sounds like "gear rollover". This is normal in a SHO.

Also I got another question. This is a completely different subject, but I don't want to flood the forum with noob question threads.

Anyways, what is that sensor thing inside the stock airbox? I wanted to remove the airbox today and put on a K&N cone filter I've had lying around, but I don't want to do anything if that sensor is important.

What does it do? And can I remove it without any problems?

Edit:

@Area 91
Thanks for that info, but I'm going to swap the tranny fluid just to be safe, and the fluid hasn't been replaced since the clutch was done over 10k ago.

That would be the Air Charge Temp sender. You do need it, but if you must put a cone on, you can just tie it to it so that it takes the temp of the air going into the filter. Just for your info a cone filter will only take away from the cold air you are getting with the stock intake setup.
