My 99 is running like a lawnmower ,well sounds like a large briggs and stratton.
And before you ask my cams were welded on this before I bought (Just found last month)it.

Its missing and has uneven idle I would think coils? Is the B&S sound reduced timing?

Last thing I did was check the front plugs(worn)and is it true the coils can go bad from being handled or is this a myth?

Also Parts America is selling an 8 pack of used coils for 129.Think these are properly tested?

On a different note I'll save some forum space and ask are the window motors cheaply made?My passenger front is totally unresponsive think its dead?

missing and uneven idle is a sign of bad coils. do you have any check engine lights? you can mix them around and see if a code follows the pack but their is no real way of testing them. that goes for used ones as well. for that price if you get 2 good ones out of the bunch youll be ahead of the game. its a risk though. ive heard the coils go bad after handling but i think its just dumb luck. however if they are on the verge of dying moving them may push it over the edge.

Yea service engine has come on it's been intermittent for about 500mi but there was little to no missing except the occasional idle stumble.

You say there's no way of testing them. But don't you mean for you or me?I can't see an ignition company branding a bad used coil? They must have some kind of machine that tests them more than you or I could test then with a multimeter?

I think you need to be able to cycle them on and off thousands of times a minute in order to see if they will start to act weird...most places can't/don't do this testing.

Ah I see well I sure couldn't do that.

I do see one problem though with this car and those coils. If you guys haven't noticed recently they are evaporating fast off parts shelves.Napa is asking 150 for a coil and I seen a Rockauto price for one for 112.I suspect within a year most won't stock them anymore.

This is a part for one specific model run of 4 years so..

My reason last year for asking about a possible alternative to the oems.In the near future this question might be an absolute need.

Example Parts america sold coils new for 60ish 6 months ago now they are all used except the 150 dollar ones,Auto Zone is the only one local to me that sells them for 72 under Duralast brand the other one is Visteon at 150.I bet the Duralasts wont last long on the shelves. Then what?1000 for coil pack?

Ok call me paranoid but there is definite trend going on here.I'm considering buying some oem or accels for stang for modding to the SHO.

Anyone want to chime in?

yeh, there is a different saturation rate for the stang and accell units...so even if they fit there will be an issue at sustained high rpms

I've got the Wells coils in mine. Personally the OEM type are to be avoided though the current ones aren't identical to what came on the cars.

I can see that with the oems but coils like MSD or Accel are supposed to be higher rpm capable than factory.I have heard people put Accel coils down so say MSD.If you used MSD coils for a Mustang I cant say rpms being an issue. And I can't say either brand is bad having used many coils in different apps over the years from either.

Mention of fit in the rear being a problem. From the look of the straight Stang coils if you could cut an inch of the boot and use a strap over the top it might fit no?

Here's a better question has anybody ever tried a non oem coil?Like an MSD performance coil.If not how can you say the oems are so good?

I never owned an oem coil that worked like I wanted it to.And many here have said about how hard it is to get power out these motors. Are you sure the factory coils arent holding some power back?

Look at this way you think Ford thinking back in 95 decided to spend a whole lot on R&Ding coils for this car ?Ha if they had this car would have came with a 6 speed manual or even a hefty 6 speed auto.

Anybody ever test these coils against anything else?

I do know that with under 94k at least 3 of the 4 front coils on mine were replaced so much for the 100k tune up.All the cars I had that I put MSD or Accel coils in I never looked back on it again.

How about a little elbow grease and less throwing money at this problem?

The thought of needing 8 coils down the road at 1200 plus tax makes me want to design my own and sell them lol.

before I spent big dollars for 8 new oem coils I contacted both accell and msd.
(tech support) both companies would love to service the sho community, neither would recommend their coils, regardless of physical fitting issues. Both supplied the coil information (sorry long lost) but they also supplied the ford specs.....I didn't buy oem because I wanted to, only because the aftermarket isn't ready to help us out..
YMMV

Well I can understand your point of view for sure.Still those companies would say they don't recommend anything if they don't make it for that particular application that would be a given.

wymjym do you have definitive specs on the SHO coil and the Mustang coils or where to get them?

BTW I have a bad coil on the front bank.Cause for the miss I'm sure now.
