When I open any door on my less than 8,000 mile SHO there is a quite loud electric motor-running type sound that lasts about 2-3 seconds (It has made the sound since I got it new last October). I turned off the automatic seat position memory, so its not the driver seat motor moving the seat (my 10 year-old Daughter would get in the seat behind the drivers seat and have no leg room or have the driver seat move into her legs when I shut the car off). Sounds similar to an electric fuel pump starting up. Anybody else have this sound or know what the source of it could be? Is it normal or should I take it to the dealer to have them figure it out? Thanks!

I like to pretend it is the F1 pump priming like when I open the door to my Ferrari. Unfortunately it isn't.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'm used to my 86 Mustang where the fuel pump turns on then you turn the key to the first position past lock and before the start position. Since the SHO is keyless, I could see having it kick in when it sensed you sitting in the driver's seat or opened the driver's door. But when any door is opened seems like a bad idea (extra wear on pump and battery). It assumes you are going to start the car when you might just be getting something out of the car or somebody is getting in the car to wait. Unlikely anybody is going to be driving the car by getting in the car from any door but the driver's door. Was probably cheaper for them to hook it up to the courtesy light circuit. It is quite loud and I have had several people ask me what the noise is when they have gotten in the car. Now I can tell them. Thanks.

Dont worry about it too much. If you continuously open the doors in a short period it will only go off once, it wont go off each time you open the door unless it needs to be primed again.

It's normal, but mine isn't all that loud, you can hear it... but just barely.

I was always wondering what that was. Yeah, it would have made more sense to hook it up with the driver's seat belt warning sensor. Somebody at Ford has flat forehead syndrome. :shakehead

That wouldn't work to well unless you believe EVERYONE ALWAYS puts there seat belt on AFTER they start the car, some folks might actually get in buckle up then hit the go button, then what, no Ford got it right.

I noticed yesterday that it also runs when you open the trunk, so NO Ford did not get it right. Buckle up first, then hit the start button. Not that hard. If you don't want to wear your seat belt, then buckle it, leave it, and sit on it.

Actually, in my opinion Ford did get it right, The comment was link it to the seat belt warning system, well that warning system ONLY ACTIVATES IF THE CAR IS STARTED AND THE SEAT BELT IS NOT ENGAGED, meaning the only time the fuel lines would be primed is if the warning was activated, SOOO if you buckle up BEFORE you start the car, NO WARNING NO PRIME NO FUN...They are assuming that an access to any part of the car will lead to an eventual startup, soooo activate fuel priming and the car is ready to start for the next ten minutes. I might come out open the trunk and drop in my golf bag well bingo its already primed for my likley eventual start up, but imagine the out cry if just once the car didn't start because the fuel DIDN'T prime, major error and egg on face, no Ford definetly got it write, besides if you don't start it, no big deal NO HARM DONE! But it was ready!!

I imagine the average owner (though maybe not the average SHO owner) would much rather hear a whirring noise when opening a door or trunk lid rather than just as they sat in the seat. And, no, using the switch for the seat belt would not be a good option. Maybe you have learned to buckle your seat belt prior to attempting to start the car, but 90% of the population, including those you may let borrow your car, will not have learned to do that.

I did notice right away that there is no delay when pressing the start button in the SHO. In my 2007 Infiniti that I traded in for the SHO there was a noticeable delay in starting, likely due to the fuel pump needing to prime the rail before engaging the starter. I appreciate the lack of delay.
