I have had this problem off and on for a bout a yr. Nothing seemed that bad until recently I noticed the soot would build up within a day or so. No blue smoke, really no smoke at all except on hard accel it may puff a grayish black (rarely). It does smell like gas from the pipes but it runs like a champ. I did notice a hestitation once in a while up to 4k but i would not say its really noticable. codes? KOEO=211, kOER =111, cYL bAL TEST 9. i am thinking the 211 was caused when i hosed (i know) the motor and flodded the wells. I had a few back fires till i realized my mistake and fixed it. The car gets about 290 miles per tank around town. I have noticed that the temp gage is slow to warm up..like 5 min or more before it moves. I am at a loss.. I just did the top 60k and replaced all that is suggested in the forum, wires , plugs, valve lash, plug well seals etc..any ideas???

I also have sooty pipes and so does just about every SHO that was at the dyno day a few weeks ago(we were discussing this). Its common and not an issue.

That's awesome because I have the same exact problem, but I have to go for emissions soon. :( I sure hope that the gas smell doesn't make me fail or something.

That is definatly good to know. On damp mornings when it is warming up, I get some condensation out of both pipes which picks up some soot. Glad to hear nothing is wrong.

Did you read all of his post? I know soot is common in the pipes all of mine have had this., but 290 miles to one full tank of gas:eek: I average between 360 - 390 miles to each tank of gas. I only had one SHO that was arond 280 - 300 miles to a tank and it has bad O2 sensors, I'd be willing to be thats your issue, that would cause black (grey) smoke to come out of the pipes if your burning too much fuel. Also with warming up check your thermostat, you probably sill have the factory original one.... since the yamahammer motor has a iron block and aluminum heads funny things happen with rust. Such as the thermostat rusting wide open and not letting the temp get high enough. I'd say thats probably the cold issue, might as well replace the temp sensor while your at it, those are common to go also:thumb:

you may have a small tank. All I get is 300 miles to the tank, and I average 27MPG in the city and around 30 on the highway. If I really push it, I can get 350-400 out of it if it is nothing but highway. I have also never put in more than 15 gals. The low gas light comes on with about 280-310 miles on the tank. What is your MPG? If that is okay, dont worry about how many miles you get to a tank.

If your thermostat and ECT are orginal it would probably benefit you to change both of those out and flush your cooling system. I would bet that your thermostat is not functioning properly as 5 min warm up is a bit excessive. The ECT and thermostat are relatively cheap and quick to replace, and can make a world of difference.

Please click one of the Quick Reply icons in the posts above to activate Quick Reply.going to replace T-stat and ECT this weekend and will see what happens.. The car runs fine and other than the the things mentioned, runs great. the soot does kinda bother me though. i already changed the 02 sensors and it did nothing to change it. I did notice one of the old sensors was clean(gray) and one had soot on it..is that normal?

No, usually they are both uniform in condition. You might have a vacuum leak on one bank of cylinders causing it to run a bit rich, but that would throw I code I would think. Don't really know about that one...

Try to get a motorcraft ECT so that it is metal and not a plastic generic one which tends to break, they are relatively similar in price, so might as well spring for the quality motorcraft one. Also, if you choose to go with an aftermarket thermostat make sure it has 'jiggle valves' and is within the 185-190 range. I prefer the motorcraft thermostat but others opt for cheaper alternatives.
