Sony Xplod problems

I bought my 93 SHO with a Sony Xplod receiver in it. The guy I bought it from said that it hadn't been working. Well I have been able to get CD's to play but the only way to change the volume is to switch to the FM source then adjust the volume. Also the automatic antenna does not open. I can hear a grinding noise so I know the motor is all right so its probably a gear problem right. And for fixing it, is there an easier way to get to it than removing the quarter panel.

So basically, what I am asking is if the receiver has a problem (as opposed to something else) and how to replace my antenna.

It sounds like you might just need a new mast. You can find them on Ebay for about $15-$20. This page will show you how to replace the mast.

Antenna mast replacement

If the mast doesn't come out completely or gets stuck, you will need to take apart the assembly. You won't have to remove the fender, just remove the inner fender liner and you can get to it.
