Factory size is 5x7.

However, 6x9s will fit with a little trimming, or a small spacer between the speaker and the package tray.

It is actually 6 x 8. There are aftermarket speakers out there fit both 5 x 7 and 6 x 8 holes but those have adaptable frames which house a 5 x 7 speaker. Go with real 6 x 8; they are available specifically for Ford applications.

Not according to Ford.

Stock is a 5x7.

well according to my car and any other taurus ive put speakers in 5x7's need a bracket or the farther out mounting pts to fit, the pioneer 6x8's i have and most of my firends have are direct replacements......the speaker index book at the car audio shop i go to says 6x8, so does the local best buy. but the ford index does say 5x7......... so either 5x7 or 6x8 works, but id go with 6x8 cuz u can barely tell, but ull have just a bit better bass response. :thumb:

And just to confuse everything even more: the JBL subs in first gen cars are bottom mounted 6x9s (under the top mounted 5x7/6x8s).

Yes, I have seen this many times over the years (I have had other Fords), and you will find speakers that are 5x7 that have extended brackets to fit the 6x8 Ford application. I just recently had to change my package shelf speakers due to crackling sounds from being rotted out - I avoid the dual size type and went with a 6x8. That said, I have the JBL set up, and the JBL sounded better. I put in the Pioneer TS-G6840R - not bad for the money but not as good. They were a perfect fit though.
