I got in my car yesterday and began to drive, about 30 seconds away from the house I realized I had only 1 big gear 2nd; the one it was in. I turned the car off and tried again, and I still only have 2nd gear. I can shift to where 1st is supposed to be, without the clutch depressed. I have no way of getting it into any other gear. And it's like there is a big void where 1st and neutral is. So any ideas??? I have already checked the shifter and it isn't broken....And I have checked the shift linkage and it's fine too. So any thoughts??? I'm thinking syncros maybe???? Please Help!!

What year SHO? I'm assuming an earlier year SHO with a cable shifter. If you checked out the linkage below the car, don't forget to check linkage connections below the shifter boot. Those cable connections can also pop off. A big "void" is most likely a disconnected cable linkage issue.

K, So now I have found the problem, The under the car shift linkage is screwed...I must of missed it the first time...so now i need the little rubber grommet because i need to replace it...the grommet goes on the coupler that links the linkage from the tranny to the linkage from the shifter...so on the shifter end there is a little grommet and FORD has it listed as obsolete...mind you I don't think the parts guys knew what i was talking about...since this part is so small and so hard too explain...so if anyone has anything that sounds like it could you please email me at [email protected] or I could send you a pic of what i need...I don't know how to post them on the forum....

Even better than spending money on that. Put the shift cable connector where it's supposed to go, and take some wire (semi-heavy gauge maybe 19 AWG or lower) and wrap the connector up a few times so it won't come off. Did this on my buddies 89 SHO and after MANY hard shifts the linkage is still intact. Beats spending money on a part that is bound to break down the road. Just make sure it's wrapped tight. If this doesn't sound good, I believe that there is a MOPAR part available that might work. Do a search for it and you should be able to find it. Good luck.

Josh T once recommended to me to use a small cross-section of power steering hose, etc., to replace the blown out bushing. Helps tighten up the shifting a little. Then tie-wrap it in place.

Also, get a rod shifter if possible. :)

Is there anything he doesn't know?!? He showed me how to make one out of PVC pipe. Fit perfectly!
