When i'm driving, it's hard for my vehicle to get up to 20 mph. Since my fuel pump has been making a loud sound for the past two years, i figured that was the problem. I went to the mechanic and they test the fuel pump, which was flowing pretty good. They are having a hard time trying to pin point the issue. They checked the timing belt and everything was fine there. While looking at the timing belt, the mechanic notice the spark plug wires were in bad shape, so he was sure this had to be the problem. After replacing the spark plugs and wires the vehicle is still not running right. I'm now up $365.00 and counting until they can find the problem. Has anyone ever expierience anything like this? Thanks in advance.

Mine does this also, but only when it is cold. Then all of a sudden it will kick in and take off like a, well, like a SHO. Does it happen even after it warms to normal operating temps? Don't really know what it could be, just trying to see if mine has the same symptoms as yours.

i had this happen in an '91 acura integra XSi i owned about 4 years ago. spent a lot of time and money, and used a lot of resources. STILL to this day we never figured out what the issue was. it just got worse and worse until it was hard to get to 40mph! had to junk it. hopefully you have better luck!!

yung1-It still drives the same even when it warms up to normal operating temperature. If I keep the pedal floored long enough, it will eventually rev up, until I have to stop at another light.

FastAndFurious-I'll have the mechanic pull the codes, they have been trying to figure out this problem for three days now. 95 atx 3.2 161,000 miles.

what you describe is a common symptom of a bad tps, although there are several other issues that can have similar symptoms.

In addition to reading stored codes, run the KOER and KOEO tests and pull resulting codes.

Unplug the MAF sensor and see if it runs better.

If a test gauge is available, check exhaust back pressure to look for clogged CAT or other exhaust obstruction.

Was fuel pressure checked in addition to flow?

The mechanic says he found the problem. He says i need a crank shaft gear. I tried looking around for this part, but it's obsolete. Today i called around to a few junk yards, and one of them told me that part is called a Harmonic Balancer. Is a Harmonic balancer and crank shaft gear the same part? I have to wait until Monday to ask my mechanic.

itwonder-fuel pressure and flow was checked, no problems

Iowe-i'm in the Brockton area

its not clear to me how your harmonic balancer would cause the car to not go over 20 mph.

however, if the crankshaft sprocket for the timing belt was bad (like it has crank cancer) then you could have the symptoms you describe. in that case you would need the crankshaft sprocket and the key.

Crank shaft GEAR?? Never heard the Harmonic Balancer referred to as that, is the balancer noisy/slipping or did the mechanic specify?

What he is probably talking about is the timing belt sprocket that goes around the crank. When people say harmonic balancer they usually mean the crank pulley that drives the accesories (atleast people that I have talked to). So they are 2 different parts. If you post in the Wanting to buy section, I would think someone would have one. What caused it to need to be replaced? If your crank bolt wasnt tight it could have caused the keyway to wear on the sprocket and the crank. Search for crank cancer. Something to check just to be safe.

i dont know how the cog gear on the crank that drives the timing belt would cause this, unless it caused the belt to jump timing which would make the car barely run.

normally a crank sensor would make it so the car dont start or not always start.

also not sure who actually tests the flow of a fuel pump.

that kind of a issue sounds to be several things possibly like a dirty or bad MAF, maybe a bad cam sensor, o2s, or plugged cats which is very very bad, possible transmission related since its a atx, oil in the plugs. etc

i guess its easier to ask what has been done? a 60k would solve this issue im sure

You guys were right, i needed a crank timing gear and key. The crank slots had open up too much, which gave it too much play. In-return that threw my timing way off. I'm also replacing the belt and belt tensioner. I'm surprised my car was able to start and drive at all.

Thanks for your suggestions and help!
