Well went to good old Autozone today to get a nee speed cable casue the old was getting a little flaky on me. Of couse they don't have the exact part but they do have a universal system that I ended up buying. Question is if I was to get rid of the upper and lower cable and have just one going from the cluster to the tranny would this affect anything? Or is there a certain reason there are two parts? Thanks all.

Hey SHOMan all you needed to do was grease up the speedo cable, thats the easiest fix.

Yeah, Ford actually specifies a speedometer cable lubricant for it in the service manual. Makes you think this is a component that got left out of the maintenance schedules. As long as the core cable is not damaged, lubricating it shoud be sufficient. You can get a replacement core cable for about $7. Check around.

I know I'm mechanically challenged, but how do you get the spring clip out to separate the cable halves?

My cable ticks, and I was going to **** it while installing a new throttle cable last Sunday..... I couldn't figure out how to release the clip (without destroying it like I do the retainers on the electrical connectors).

I had a speedo issue where my speedo was off (slow) by 7mph. We replaced the VSS, cables and still had the issue, so I got a speedo head and it fixed it but still had a bouncing (slight) and jerky on aceleration. So I remove one of the cable and it went away. Its been smooth since then.

Great question, I just bought a new upper cable from Ford but I haven't figured out to remove the clip from the joint between the upper and lower cables.
