Ok...so I just bought my 94 SHO witht he 3.2L and the first day I had it the serp belt was shredded. It didnt snap, I assume that it slid over the edge and got carved up that way due to a bad bearing or tensioner pulley. I got a new belt today and put it on and when I did I found that the tensioner pulley had more than enough tension to keep the belt tight. In fact, I had to put a decent amount of downward force to get it on there. When I started the car it squealed for a minute or so and then went away and the belt was riding on the pulleys nicely. I turned the wheels all the way to the left and right and had no slipping or shuddering to indicate that the belt was off. I drove to work perfectly fine, but when I came out from work and started the car it squealed again and on the way home it started to shred the brand new belt. Luckily I live close enough that I limped home keeping the RPMs down so not to be stranded. I assume that one of the pulleys is bad or that one of the bearing are bad? possibly even the bearing in the tensioner? If anyone has any insight I would be greatly appreciative. Thanks

When my GenIII was shredding belts it took me forever to figure out that the belt path was way off because the 2 piece crank pulley was seperating. That could be the case for your car, or it could be a bad tensioner or pulley bearing. Look to make sure the routed belt is not too far out of what looks normal or symmetrical. You should be able to pinpoint a bearing failure if you spend enough time in there. Sucks it's so cold to get at this.

so if its the crank pulley I can just replace it with a new one right? Regardless, im heading to the shop to have them diagnose it monday. hopefully they wont charge me an arm and a leg. its too damn cold to be out there ripping another belt off and destroying my hands any more than they already are.

The crank pulley is a 2 piece design and if the rubber in the middle fails you have to replace it. I got a used one to replace mine.

I had this happen in my 95 ATX. It was most definitely the crank pulley. The rubber was separating allowing the pulley to be out of line of the other pulleys.
I am thinking this is most likely your problem. Sounds familiar.

you have a 50/50 chance of needing a puller - it might wiggle off, or it might be stuck on the crank.

On the the GenIII there are threaded holes in the pulley that you can put a bolt in and turning it pushes it out that way. Been a long time since I had my GenI. I think that one I used a puller on but get an eyeball on it to make sure.
