need help here...I go to stop and the car just shuts off, not stalls, just turns off, sometimes I'll still be going 20 miles an hour....kind of scary. It didn't throw any codes, tried a new computer, tested egr valve, pcv valve, cleaned the IAC, neither mechanic nor I can figure out what it is, suspect it could be the CPS, but is there a way to test that? HELP!!!

Does your car have to cool off before it starts again? If that's the case it is probably your CPS. That won't always throw a code. Good luck and if it is the CPS i would put a new waterpump in just in case it is leaking causing that sensor to go bad.

Whoever did the waterpump probably didn't do the CPS  while they were in there. order it from either fordpartsnetwork $79.99 or from rockauto. I ordered mine from fordpartsnetwork and they got it here pretty quick. I would order it, then start taking everything apart. By the time it comes in you'll be ready for install :D .One tip when doing this job get a 19mm socket place it on the crank bolt then bump the starter. Best way to get that bolt off. Good luck.

Now that i reread your reply how many times did it do this? My car stalled then restarted a couple times. Then it stalled and wouldn't start till it cooled off.

It only did it a couple times a while ago, then it started doing it again, and now it does it like all the time. It doesn't have to cool down at all, I can practically restart it while it's still rolling.

I would check to make sure all of your connections are good. I think your problem might be a camshaft position sensor. You can get those from the same place. I would search the forum for discussions on those.

Is there any way you can test those first, because I've already spent enough money on the problem as it is.

I thought I read somewhere in my recent searches about a way to test it but I can't remember. Sorry. If it were me I would check out the battery and all of the wires and connections to and from it first. Just to be sure, you completely lose all power, lights, radio etc.? I had a problem last year with my battery that was causing the same problem. Something had come loose inside or something so when I would test it it would say it was fine but driving down the road I would sporadically lose power. Do you have another battery you could swap with for a few miles? If you aren't losing lights or power to everything else then I would think that the cps is the culprit.

no, I still have power, because when the car shuts off all the lights on the dash come on, its just the engine that shuts off. The radio and all that still work

What does the tach register when you try and crank it in a no-start situation?

Another thing to note, as far as I know it's never quit when driving along at a constant speed, it always does it when braking to a stop or slowing down. Also I think it only does it when I brake and put the clutch in; it never does it when I heel and toe down through the gears, just when I shove the clutch in and apply the brakes.

2 things. A crankshaft sensor is $43 @ autozone, don't spend more money than it is worth. Also, a Camshaft sensor will not cause a car to stall, it is there for start-up, to tell the computer the position of the cams.

Well my guess is that it's neither the CKP or CMP (crankshaft or camshaft position sensor). Both those sensors would cause the car to stall not just turn off. And it's definitely not the battery as once the car is running the altenator keeps the car running (you can actually disconnect the battery while the car is running and the car will continue to run as long as the altenator is functioning correctly). So my guess would be the ignition switch. Something is loose in there or it's just shorting out, causing the car to think you turned the key to the off position. Check that out. I'm definitely interested in hearing what you find the problem to be.

And SHO91MTX, a CMP (Camshaft position sensor) can cause the car to stall. Just ask me... But adidasho's problem is the car is just shutting off, NOT stalling.

I heard an interesting thing about the ignition switch that if you have a huge lot of stuff on your keychain Taurii had a problem with the ignition switch shorting, but I have just 2 keys, so that's not it. I looked up all the Technical Service Bulletins on Alldata and there was nothing that related; I asked a Ford expert and he said it's probably the wiring harness shorting, so I have to check that out. Any more suggestions will be sweet, I'll keep you posted.

Just because you don't have a ton of key on your keyring doesn't mean that the ignition switch isn't shorting out. That's like saying if the power goes out it must mean you didn't pay the electric bill. Good luck and keep looking.

I am having the same problem here. Actually, two problems, maybe they are related. My sho shuts off too, periodically when slowing down/pushing in the clutch. It always seems to start right back up. I even replaced the battery and that didn't cure the problem. Also, I am having problems with it cranking over after it has been driven. I will get power, but no cranking. Could this be a starter problem or ignition switch problem like others have mentioned?

Okay, new info on this one, it's not anything shorting, because we did get it to not stall, it only happens when the rpms are coming down fast, not downshifiting, and if you catch it and rev the throttle you can keep it from stalling.
