Any updates? Seems like you are still mid stride with this monster project... I hope you've got a reliable income (;

Also, I read up on the Porsche 928, that things is wicked cool, the Variocam is a good idea but If I was you I'd focus on the basic fabrication stuff, get the car running and finished to look like it's a factory product. (even if that intake and a turbo(s) don't look so "factory" hehe) .

Find a junkyard engine to experiment with if your truly looking at the VVT, that way your not bogging down an already time/money consuming project...

If you did eventually get some sort of valid VVT functioning that'd be epic and you'd probably have you own space in SHO modification history :D

A came up with a design to advance / retard timing on sbc a while ago, its used a longer timing chain for a raided cam block and had idlers on either side that were connected on a common shaft, the idlers would move side to side allowing the slack to move from the load side to idler side, this would advance or retard cam timing a few degrees while running.

^ Great minds think alike! I was thinking of the same thing, but for a simple VW 8v motor. I never tried it, but I had essentially the same technique all figured out in my head. You could use an air or electric solenoid to operate the idlers.

Here's another idea: Anyone ever hear of the Franco "Self-Adjusting" cam gear for the VW 8v motors back in the day?

It worked by having a pair of spring-loaded weights within the gear. At higher RPM, the centrifugal force of the weights would rotate the gear relative to the camshaft, and retard timing by up to ten degrees at the high end.

It was a novel idea but didn't catch on. Possibly due to the cost, or because the moving parts needed frequent maintenance. The article also says the weights would rattle at lower RPM.
