Is there a way to tell if a cam lobe is worn or the rod bearings need replacement without tearing into the engine? Any specific noise to listen for? Drivability problems? I'm currently trying to decide whether or not to purchase a '95 MTX SHO with 158K on it. There is no documentation to verify the verbal report of routine maintenance having been done. Thanks

at 158K I would do the rod bearings just to be safe... it's alot cheaper than replacing the motor.

You are right on the bearings. I was wondering if there was something to look/listen for if (knowing ) they've never been replaced.

As far as the wear on the camshaft lobes, you would have to look at all of them to know for sure and that would require the removal of the intake manifold and valve covers. Not a trivial task. You can see part of one lobe through the oil fill cap. If it is showing the characteristic oval shaped, tree ring wear on the tip of that one lobe, that would not be a good sign.
