Is it possible to shift gears while the ABS is on?

Recently when shifting from 2nd to 1st while gently applying the brakes, I slid on some ice. So when I tried to enter 1st while the brakes were pulsating It made a horrible sound and was not able to get into first until I came to a stop.

The ABS system and the transmission are only connected by the axles. The brakes should have no effect on the transmission. Are you sure the clutch was fully depressed to shift?
