i have found recently that shifting from first to second at anything above 6k rpm (under "hard" acceleration) is far from being pleasant. there is grinding if i try to put it into second, and have to wait until the rpms hit about 5k. the clutch pedal is pushed all the way in, and it shifts fine below 6k.
any theories out there? am i doing something wrong? shrug

You could have a synchro going bad or maybe just the fluid needs to be changed/topped up. Aside from that I would say it could be a bad motor mount or sub frame bushings.

I've got the same problem, but mine is more present when the tranny is cold. It's either a syncro or the blocking ring, I changed the fluid to GM Syncromesh but with no good results on the second gear shift.

I think that second gear is the largest gear physically in the box, therefore it is the most difficult to slow down.
The blocking ring/synchronizer is what is supposed to do it and when you put it in geat even though the clutch is still not engaged the shift lever is what you are pressing the snchro into the gear with.
If there is high milage it most likely is a worn (polished) synchro but you haven't completely eliminated the clutch not fully releasing yet and you have to do that to keep from pulling the tranny apart unnecessarily.
I noticed that the internal shift gate on second gear in my box is a little tighter then the others and makes 2nd a little "notchy". I saw no perceptual wear on my sychro at all when it was apart, it was the gate finger and it is "worse" now with new trans fluid in it.
One of the problems with synchros and synthetic trans fluid is that the synthetic is so slick that it negates some of the friction that is necessary for the snchro (brake) to work.
The answer may be to go to a higher friction lubrication in the box as it aquires milage but everyone is going to have a different experience since everyone has a different feel for the box and different wear characteristics in the box.
