Well I had to grind down the metal spacer thats between the bar and the tranny because the first part of the threads that the factory bolt grabbed were totally gone, so I ground down the metal spacer to make the bolt go in farther and now it grabs threads. But it seems to grinf every once in a while now? Only into 2nd and 3rd gear. Thats only if I don't pause between the shift for a second if I do that there is no grind it's like it has time to settle or something then it don't grind. Also once the car is warmed up it don't grind? I was thinking since I ground down the metal spacer it had to pull the stabalizer bar farther to the driver side there fore slightly rotating things and making it not align which would cause this problem? I tried finding a longer metric version of the bolt but I couldn't so now I'm thinking I better find one.

Mine stripped out due to a bad Fidanza flywheel--long story. Anyway, I used a perma-coil/heli-coil to fix it. I would guess that grinding the spacer down was not a good idea. Doesn't that force it to sit at an angle it wasn't meant for? I think that would affect proper functioning. How about doing the thread repair and using washers to build up the spacer again?

Good luck.

Your two problems are not related. The stabilizer bar is just a pivot point for the shifter and a move of 1/2 an inch to either side will not affect operation.

The problem you describe sounds more like worn synchros. It's a factor that plays in when you drive a 12 year old car unfortunetly. It's not something to panic over as they should be fine for awhile to come, but until you have the transmission out, double clutch when the vehicle is cold. This is a good practice to have even if you're not grinding.

Did you experience the grinding before you had problems with the rod shifter?? If you wait a second before putting it into gear then like Mikey said it's most likely not the rod shifter causing the problem. But if it wasn't doing it before it seems weird that 2 different sets of synchro/blocking rings would be acting up. 2nd and 3rd gear both use different synchros. There's the 1/2 synchro and the 3/4 synchro. Just something to think about.

It didn't seem to grind before that, but then again the shifter itself moved back and forth a lot. Someone was saying how having anything to do with the shifter out of alignment it would cause problems. I mean the stabalizer bar is a few feet long so that minor half inch is a lot more where the black box is at? How long would bad syncros be fine for? It's only going to be on the road this summer then hopefully plans start coming together as I mentioned in another post that you read mikey :evil_gri: Then the tranny would probably be pulled.

Have you tried changing transmission fluid?

I'm currently using Valvoline Max-Life ATF - works pretty well. I'm gonna try Mobil 1 ATF next time I get the chance.

A transmission fluid change is definetly a good alternative or "last ditch effort" to changing worn synchros. If you plan on pulling the transmission in the coming months then you should be fine with a fluid change. It may not cure your problem, but it should improve it.

Yeah I was going to do that really soon once I get paid on friday, I was hoping thats all it is but figured why not put a post on here anyways. Also Chris thats a sweet sig pic what profile of tires are those? And it almost looks like your car is lowered, that isn't photochopped right?

I had that bar pull ot of my tranny too. When i swapped motors out( It was my first time) I put the sway Bar In upside down. The car drove fine and handeled ok for about 10,000 miles then one day the shifter turned to sphagetti feeling and I couldnt get my car in gear. Thats what happens when that bar pulls out of the tranny. So I tapped the hole in the tranny and bolted the rod back in with the bar upside down still. Lokked at it again and realized what I did

Nice, LOL. Yeah I had to drive a few days with the bar wired up sometimes I could get into 2nd or 4th, but most of the time I just went 1st, 3rd, 5th. It was easier that way. Well anyways thanks for the help :thumbs_u:

I had the same problem when the outer threads was stripped I went to Lowes hardware dept and found a bolt that was slightly longer and a couple of washers a lock wash. I check it daily for a week of driving and its still tight. It would be a good idea to check your motor mounts for excess movement because this would contribute to this problem.
