I have a rod shifter and sometimes it grinds when i try to put it in gear. could there be a problem with the tranny itself such as syncros or pilot bearings or maybe i need a part for the actually rod shifter as it does seem to be sloppy.. any help would be great

Have you looked under the car at the entire shifter support? The second tube on the shifter, the support/brace piece, broke right in half on my car because it was so rusted and i went down the drag strip with ****** motor mounts. The shifter got really sloppy then because that support had separated and wasn't holding the shifter in the right spot.

One thing that I just found with the 92, is that inside the shifter box, that there was alot of play where the shifter cup attaches to the transfer rod, the factory crimped connection was loose causing the shifter to move side to side alot more, and forwards and back, removed hte shifter and rod, welded the crap out of it, and there is no more play there any more.

Sometimes difficulty in getting into gear may be caused by clutch diaphram finger wear. When the fingerws are worn the clutch does not relase completely. What is your clutch setup and how many miles do you have?
