Shifter moves free

shifter moves all over but i still have third and fourth gear. Kinda burning up clutch just to get it home. gonna check clip but i don't know if that is it. any ideas

cable shifter? check to see if the plastic socket at the end of the cable pops freely or solidly onto the ball joint at the transmission. if its moving freely on and off, you've got the same problem as me, and will need to replace your shifter (or maybe just the cables if thats possible? ). I'm taking this opportunity to upgrade to a rod shifter. for now, i've some pretty stiff wire to hold it in place, but its only a very temporary fix for the next few weeks until i do the swap. I feel comfortable with it, because the car isn't being driven until the swap, but i did take it for a spin to test it out, and it feels as solid as if it were new again.
