Intstalled my Moog lower ball joints today. Man were they a pain. The front end feels tighter BUT I think the sound is still there! It doesnt seem as audible but I'm pretty sure it's still clunking when I shift. Looks like I'll have to see what happens when the new mounts are installed.

Bizzy:
I skimmed the responses and didn't see anyone ask about your tranny mount. It's on the driver's side near your feet as well. You might want to look into that.

To check the front and rear motor mounts do the following.

With the hood up so you can see the motor, put your foot on the brake pedal and ensure that the car doesn't move forward or backward when doing this.

Put the car in first and give the car slight gas while holding the brake down and watch the motor. Does it move? Do the same thing in reverse. If it moves up on either the front or rear of the car when doing the above then you have yourself some bad mounts.

Sway bar links will cause a clunking sound also as will improperly installed struts and springs and bad strut mounts.

Scott Patterson also outlined how to remedy a clunking sound caused by the spring. Though I don't have time at the moment to search it out for you.

Just a few things to check.

Edit: Also, was the subframe plate nut recall done on your car?
How are your motor mounts and tranny mounts?

I found out that my driver side knuckle is bad. The hole where the ball joint slides into and pinches down is worn out, allowing the ball joint to move freely. When you move the tire side to side when it's on jacks it's seems like you can take it off, it moves a lot! I'm hoping this is the cause, although I dont hear it quite as much, I still need a knuckle.

I had a similar problem with mine. I found out that the pinch bolt was stretched and bowed. I replaced the pinch bolt and have had no more problems.

Where did you buy the pinch bolt?

When you moved the tire could you see the ball joint moving a lot, it seems like it could just be the pinch bolt like you said. If it were to warp at all it wouldnt fit in the ball joint well. I have never heard of Knuckles wearing out...

I bought them from FPS but they can be purchased from any Ford Stealership. I don't recall the part number, but they are standard Taurus stuff
