AFter running my sho for awhile the temp gauge goes to 3/4 and the fan kicks on way to late. Highway driving she stays cool but the stop and go trafic of the city burns her up. Any suggestions?

How hot is it outside?

Most of my SHO's did this and they were all completely normal. I had good advice once- if it is still in the normal range, it's still normal... If is is above 80 degrees, my cars have almost all done that in the city.

Question is, have you had the car in hot weather maybe last year, when it didn't do this at all...

if it's hot outside, that was normal on my cars... you're only getting cold airflow when running on the highway. My fans turn on at 5/8 to 3/4 on the gauge... In the winter, it would rarely go past the bottom of the normal area.

Hit that baby with an infared temp gun. That will tell you if it's hot. The ford temp guages aren't the most accurate.

P.S. Where are you in PA? My SHOp is in Selinsgrove.

I thought I had a problem with this so I will share my recent experience. My needle would go to the O in normal which worried me. Fan kicks on at the O so what do I conclude? The O is about 212 degrees. I put my pillar guages on and the car ran at 195 going down the road but popped to 212 /214 in traffic...fan came on when it should have. Now my pillar gauge replaced the stock water temp sensor bung so I couldnt run side by side comparison.

Some gauges just read differently. You are fine.

The needle on the temp gauge is only as acurate as the person who installed it to the assembly. I would gladly move it to where ever you wanted it if you lived close to me.

Now onto the fans as mentioned start the car and turn the A/C on (not max). The fans should kick on in low speed allow the car to idle and listen for the fans to kick into hi speed when at operating temp for a period of time.

Heating + Coolant Smell

Check underneathe that you don't have a leaking water pump. After my 2nd water pump, I discovered two months ago that my water pump was leaking. I never saw any coolant under the car, but what was happening is that the coolant was actually dripping on the hot catalytic converter and is was burning off before it hits the ground. If your SHO is high mileage, it might be time for a replacement. I just did my water pump last week and the job went fairly well. While everything was disassembled, I replaced CPS, timing belt, front main seal, and serpentine belt. It might be a good idea to replace your thermostat, if it has not been replaced for a long time. Good luck.

Do you smell it inside or outside of the car. You could disconnect the ac clutch electrical connector and then turn the AC on and should still get the fans to kick on. I don't recall the system being smart enough to recognize the clutch not being physically on/connected and not turn the fans on.
