This one has me stumped a little, I'll admit.

It started yesterday while I was on the parkway. I'd just left Manhattan traffic. 5th gear, at 60MPH or so. I'm off the gas, and when I go back on the gas, the car hesitates and then goes. I let off again, and hit it, and it did it again. By the time I get to the toll plaza, it'd stopped doing it. Later on, I had to go back into Manhattan, and that when all **** broke loose. I was at a light, and I noticed that my idle was a little high. Like 2000RPM high. When the light turned green, I edged into the gas and began letting out the clutch, and the car starts to stall? I clutch in, and it recovers and finds idle again at 1800RPM this time. I manage to get across Broadway without stalling, and this time I just hit the gas lightly. The RPM's instantly drop down to almost stalling... and then shoot up to 3000. As the idle comes down, the hesitation begins to subside, but now it's doing it again today, in so much that I tap the gas, and them RPM's drop first, and then shoot up. Tap gas, RPM drop, then RPM rise.

I tested the TPS last night, and there was just a hair of a dead spot at the beginning of the throttle plate sweep. I'm going to replace it when I get home later, but I'm not 100% convinced that this is the problem, though I'm really hoping it is.

Also, something else (whether the two are related or not remains to be seen) is that the cooling fan cycles on where it normally would, and then cycles off where it normally would... and then immeidately turns back on again. And then off, and then immediately on again. It'll continue to do this until the temp gets almost to the blue mark (just barely in Normal range), and then shut off until the needle it back at the bottom of the A where it starts all over again.

And my gas mileage took a nose dive; not something I can afford at 2.89 a gallon. :frown:

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

*edit*
And gals.

I would start with checking for any codes. However, to me, it sounds as if you have a couple of issues. The light throttle stalling is often times related to a dirty MAF. I never belived it until I cleaned mine one time, the difference was amazing. The high idle is most likely related to your idle air control valve. Its job in life is to control the idle. If it takes a day off, your idle will go crazy. And third, you ECT ( engine coolant temp ) sensor, sounds like is out of control. IIRC it controls the fans as well as feeding the ECM with temp readings. Meaning you could be running a closed loop, making the car run rich. Which would result in crazy situations like bogging down and use twice as much fuel.

Start with the codes. Do a KOER with the car warm. Good luck and post your results.

I was almost gonna say that it hasn't thrown a CEL, but then it just dawned on me... my CEL circuit took a shit. Anyone know if there's a bulb output at the test connector, or am I going to have to track down a scantool?

What did you use to clean the MAF? I've had similar symptoms to what racer x is having, plus some other issues on the side, and I was thinking about cleaning the sensor to see what happens.

Well, the code scan came back 111, so I did a little digging, and some thinking...

The drop in idle was partially the fault of the TPS, but when left running for a while, it came back, along with the high idle, and the constantly running cooling fan. I also noticed that the exhaust was really rich. Like "hey I could probably ignite this if I had a lighter" rich. Yeah, that rich. At first I didn't think the ECT sensor, because I just replaced it not 2 months ago, but when I looked, the harness was loose. Plugged it back in... and so far so good. :thumb:

I also cleaned the MAF, and that helped with some of the hesitation too, and the idle quality improved.

So yeah, I'm thinking... hoping its fixed. :)

Well, the drivability is fixed, but I still have an excessive rich issue at cold weather startup. Yesterday it was 19º when I started the car, and until it warmed up sufficiently, it would stumble slightly off idle. Cruising and acceleration are ok. Once it's warmed up, it's much better, though at really cold temperatures, the stumble is still there barely.

The MAF is clean, the TPS is replaced with a known good unit, the ECT sensor is brand new (brass), and it has 1 year on new AC Delco wires and Motorcraft plugs, and new gaskets everywhere, save for the CID sensor where there's a small leak.

Ugh...
