What is this recall about the subframe plate or something. I have heard some of it, but not all of it. What exactly was/is it and how can I tell if it was done??

The bolts they used from the factory would get rusted out and bust...this will cause the subframe to fall off the frame...which locks the steering, etc...could be fatal going down the highway.

I had it happen to me on a 88lx taurus...scared the shit out of me...good thing I was only going 20mph in town instead of 65 on the highway eek! eek!

Ford recalled this and will fix it for FREE...get it done asap...

You can tell if its been done by pulling up your carpet on the driver or passnger side and seeing if there is a plug in the floor where they drilled out to put in the new pieces.

if you jack up certain areas you can also see if there is anymovement...if there is get all of it replaced...its not worth the risk...

oh_my just my $.02

The original recall (92S61) was to replace 1986-88 Taurus/Sable and Continental (in certain salt-belt states only) rear subframe bolts and plates (washers)..the original thin plates would rust and the bolts could pull through.
In 1993, 92S61 was expanded to cover 1989-93 Taurus/Sable (except 2.5L and 1989-92 SHO) and Continental.
In 1998, recall 98S36 superseded 92S61, covering 1986-95 Taurus/Sable and 1988-94 Continental, to replace rear subframe bolts,
plates, and also nuts. See below.

Subject:
Safety Recall 92S61 - Certain 1986, 1987 and 1988 Model Taurus and
Sable and 1988 Continental Cars for Installation of Subframe Rear Lower
Body Mount Reinforcements

Affected Vehicles
Certain 1986, 1987 and 1988 model year 3.0L and 3.8L Taurus and Sable
and all 1988 Continental cars that were originally sold or are
currently registered in the following states: Connecticut, Illinois,
Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, New
Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Wisconsin.

Reasons For Recall
The body mounts on the rear corners of the subframe that supports the
engine and transmission may separate. This can occur if the lower
retainer plate of the mount is severely corroded. The corrosion is the
result of heavy use of calcium and sodium chloride salts for road dust
and ice control in the above noted states and retention of moisture in
the mounts. This corrosion can weaken the retainer plate of the mount
severely enough to allow the bolt head to pull through. Should both
rear mounts separate, the rear of the subframe will drop and steering
may suddenly become difficult. This could result in an accident.

To correct this condition, dealers are to install reinforcement plates
on the bottom of the subframe rear lower body mounts and replace the
attaching bolts.

In instances where an owner whose vehicle is not listed in OASIS
believes the vehicle should have been included, or this condition
(i.e., corrosion-related separation of the subframe rear lower body
mounts) is observed in a vehicle not covered by this action, obtain
prior FPSD District Office approval and submit an 1864 claim via DWE in
the normal manner for reimbursement.

Refunds
When all or a portion of the repair covered by this recall
(corrosion-related separation of the subframe rear lower body mounts)
has previously been paid by the owner and/or dealer prior to the
release of the recall, both the owner and/or dealer are eligible for a
refund.

All Ford and Lincoln - Mercury Dealers

Subject:
Safety Recall 98S36 - Certain 1986 - 1995 Taurus and Sable and 1988 -
1994 Continental Vehicles - Sub-Frame Rear Plate Nut Replacement

AFFECTED VEHICLES
Certain 1986-1995 Taurus and Sable and 1988-1994 Continental vehicles
that were originally sold or are currently registered in the following
U.S. states and Canadian Provinces:
U.S. States: Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia,
Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland,
Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire,
New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont,
Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin.
Canadian Provinces: Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova
Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec.

REASONS FOR RECALL
The body mounts on the rear corners of the sub-frame that support the
engine and transmission may separate. This can occur if the lower
retainer plate of the mount or the retaining plate nut becomes severely
corroded from long term exposure to road salts and retention of
moisture in the mounts. This corrosion can weaken the retainer plate of
the mount or the retaining plate nut severely enough to allow the bolt
head to pull through the washer or out of the nut. Should both rear
mounts separate, the rear of the sub-frame will drop and steering may
suddenly become difficult. This could result in an accident.

SERVICE ACTION
To correct this condition, dealers will replace the attaching bolts,
plate nuts and the reinforcement plates on the bottom of the sub-frame
rear body mounts, on all affected vehicles.

SERVICE TRACKING
To monitor the effectiveness of regional programs, it is important
that:

any vehicle with the same concern or operated in the same conditions
as the affected vehicles be identified and

any affected vehicle listed in OASIS, presented for service to a
dealer outside the geographic area covered by the Safety Program, be
serviced under the terms of the program.

If a vehicle, not listed in OASIS, with the same concern or operated in
the same conditions as affected vehicles listed in OASIS is presented
for service, it is important that dealers obtain as much information
about the vehicle as possible. Dealers are to call 1-800-325-5621 and
provide Ford Motor Company with a description of the concern, VIN,
model year and mileage. In appropriate situations, where the customer
is willing to cooperate with the dealer in providing the required
information and has agreed to provide the affected parts for possible
inspection by the Company, the dealer will receive approval and will be
reimbursed for performing the repair upon submission of the claim.

If an affected vehicle is presented to a dealer outside the geographic
area covered by the program and if the vehicle is listed in OASIS, the
dealer should perform the repair and submit the claim for reimbursement
as prescribed in the program bulletin.

REPAIR APPROVAL/CLAIMS
In order to claim repairs on vehicles not included in the Notification
Program, the dealer must call 1-800-325-5621, provide the information
described above and obtain approval. Then, submit the claim under the
Notification Program according to the directions on page 3-63 of the
ACES II manual. Include the following information if the vehicle in
question has the same concern or operated in the same conditions as
those described in the Notification Program:
a description of the concern on the customer's vehicle
the VIN, model year and mileage of the vehicle
customer agreement to provide the affected parts for possible
inspection by the Company

My next door neighbor has an '85 Chevy Celebrity that the subframe bolts rusted and broke on as well. If it had happened while he was driving, he could have been killed, as the steering rack pulled away from the steering colum stub. I wonder if a whole bunch of cars don't have this problem, and we just don't know about it? eek!

Just picked up a 91 and on the way home noticed the steering all of the sudden feeling a little funny. Pulled into a rest stop a couple miles from home and couldn't find anything. Crawled underneath and found the drivers side rear bolt had pulled through and the nut/plate were gone. I was going to fix myself, but if there's a recall, then maybe I should take it in. It was a Wisconsin car originally and I picked it up from a guy in Illinois, the way I read it both states fall into this recall. Should I take it into the Ford dealer, or should I fix myself? Seems like an easy fix, but I would have to cut an access hole either through the floorpan or fenderwell to get up in there. Looking to fix quick- I want to get it on the road- I'm dying to drive it on these Kentucky country roads. Thanks!
