Hello, I have searched endlessly but can't find a similar problem so I decided to ask directly.

A few years ago my 1992 mtx went from running fine to garbage overnight, like a switch. The motor has only about 90000km on it (rebuilt), turn the key it starts then dies, try again same thing, then always on the third or fourth try it starts but runs like only half a cylinder is firing. After about 3-4min the rpms go to about 4000 and then comes down slowly and as the car warms up it runs better but still not smooth and there is no power.

My mechanic (a parts changer basically) did a wet/dry compression test and said that all of the front bank was low and that the valves were not seating because of carbon buildup. However another guy who works there said that is unlikely and that maybe the timing belt skipped a tooth or something like that, I don't know what to think.

Here are the things I do know

1-No smoke or leaking fluids
2-No mixing of oil and coolant
3-No abnormal noises
4-No codes

I don't really want to take it to my local dealer but I miss driving it very much, any help would be great.

i would just do a full 60k.. I just priced the parts out and it its going to be at around 300 bux depending on where yu get your parts.. that could ba a number of things from fouled plugs to mistiming like your mechanic said and a lot in between.

I would start with a front 60K - CPS, CID, inspect WP for dripping leaks (leaks onto CPS), timing belt, front main seal.

Check plug wells for oil and/or water in them.

Run the koer test and report what it tells you about cylinder balance.

Also.. think about checking if the DIS is grounded properly, corrosion and moisture seem to really EFF them things up.

+1 for the FULL 60k

(if you haven't already done so)

wow....this is exactly what my car is doing right now! Funny that mine is a 92 also. Did this guy ever find out his problem? I'm tired of throwing parts at my car for a month now.
