I have just acquired another SHO a 93 MTX, it is running very poorly like maybe the timing is slightly off. I ran KOEO, KOER and the balance test a few times the only code I get is 565 purge canister valve. The car sputters and surges at idle and when accelerating (Almost like a week cylinder.) Also, the car has trouble finding idle it revs up and down. But the balance test says all cylinders are the same. The car has new Motocraft plugs and plug wires. I have looked for a vacuum leaks and cleaned the MAS. Could this be the CPS? Any ideas?

It's NOT the CPS. When that component fails, the engine shuts off completely - as in no spark. Engine misfires without telltale codes are usually sourced from the plugs or plug wires. Which new Motorcraft plugs and wires are insatlled? Is there any oil in the spark plug wells? How did you clean the MAF sensor?

The front three plug wells are spotless other than a bit of dust, I will remove the intake to get a better look at the rear three when I get home. I never thought to check the plugs when I saw they were Motocraft. The MAS looked really clean on the inside so I sprayed the sample tube with carb cleaner and let it sit. Will the SHO run with out the MAS, I've never tried it on my last SHO but I know my probe won't make it to the end of the drive way with it disconnected.

The Plugs are Motocraft AGSP32PP according to the SHO FAQ they are the correct ones. Running the car with the MAF sensor disconnected dosen't seem to make much if any diffrence in the way it idles I'm going to take it around the block to be sure.

It runs the same with the MAF dissconnected excpt for the Check Engine light. So I switched it out with a known good one no change.

Have you tried cleaning the IAB?

I just spent a while today cleaning my MAF and IAB-- my 89 started surging at idle last week, and has (for the past 20K) had a slight surge when stomping the throttle below 2000RPM. For a while I thought one of my cylinders was a little out of spec, though I never threw any codes and the cylinder balance test always came out OK. Anyway, after cleaning the MAF and IAB today, I fired up the engine, it relearned its idle, and I went for a short test drive. Results: idle smoother than it's ever been (I used to get a slight vibration at idle), and between 1200 and 2000 RPM, I can stomp the gas as hard as I want, and there's not the slightest bucking.

Go for the IAB as Arjun suggested. Either clean it, which might help, or just go ahead and replace it. It costs about $55 at AutoZone.

In either event, you must perform the idle relearn procedure when you finish the mechanical work.

IAB, I'll check it out.

After pulling all of the plugs two of them atr not Double Platinum They are Motocraft Platinum AGSP32PP? The Threds are not Platinum on those two, The other four are Motocraft AGSP32PP, They were all of them are in very good shape but the two single platinums have a bit of carbon on them. I'm Replacing all of them.

Funny things you find when you buy a used car.

I love a good Told-you-So. thumbs_u thumbs_u

The AGSP-32PP are the double platinun, both the anode and electrode have coatings of platinum, but the threads never do.
