Hey, guys i have a few symtoms that i'm trying to pinpoint. First, my sho is running very roughly(hesitating and surging) while driving. My idle often revs very high and then goes down while sitting still. I changed the plugs and that helped the rough idling for a while. Now i noticed an air leak in a hose, in the engine bay infront of the steering wheel below the windsheild. But i couldn't pin point it. Could this be my problem? and if so, how do i correct this?

A vacuum leak could definitely cause a high idle (excessive idle byass air) and erratic (lean) running. You must resolve that condition to have a chance at getting the engine to run normally again. Are you seeing the CHECK ENGINE light? The codes could also help identify the problem. If you have codes, they probably point to a vacuum leak. The vacuum leak must be found and fixed.

Try not running the car too long....your making it too hot!

You headlights are on high beams!

Thats not the gear shifter!!

If the Tokicos are a rockin' don't come a knockin'!

I really don't get going until around 4k rpms! (you figure what rpm stands for!)

"Hey baby....I got a 2.5 inch exhaust!"

and.....I think you just blew your 3.2 head gasket....its gonna cost ya.

my apologies.

You guys are very funny...... :snicker: not. Can someone w/some know how(and not fantasies), advise on on to pinpoint the leak. I've tried spraying soap water in the area, but still couldn 't find it.

Best thing you can do is use your ears and listen for the leak. Here's a hi-res diagram of the vacuum system in a 91 from the EVTM manual. Please note that it may be different in your car. This is the best I can do to help.

File is 1.25 mb...best to right click, save as

Its most likely a vaccum leak so soapy water isnt going to bubble becuase its getting sucked in. I would start the car.

Then get alcohol (as its better on the engine) and attach a sprayer to it. Now dont go crazy and get it all over your paint or anything.

Slowly spray one area pretty good. If no idle changes move on.

Continue this until you find the leak.

If this doesnt work then it very well may be a soft line as opposed to a hard line and it may not leak at idle but under load thus causing it to flex and create vaccum.

Obviously if the first way doesnt work it gets a little tricker to keep the car running at a higher RPM while doing this. I would just start tot check some of the more flexible lines and look for cracks.

Have you done recent work to the engine? Maybe even an oil change or something? Could ahve bumped a hose and casued it to break etc.

In the engine bay the only thing i've done is oil change, but i did have someone look at my cruise control. It's coming from that area.
