yes they were white and yes how do i clean the maf? with electrical connector cleaner or carb cleaner? i know i need to take it out of the aluminum part and clean the electrode but with? also will a clean maf help with gas mileage?

You can clean it while it's still inside the housing. The element is exposed. It should help with mileage and performance if it is not performing properly and returns to proper function. I would use electronics cleaner. Carb. cleaner might leave a residue.

took it out and cleaned it, will know the results tomorrow. should i have been able to see "dirt" or whatever on the electrodes or it it just kind of a clean it and see if theres a difference?

You should definitely use something that leaves no residue. Electrical Contact Cleaner is the usual suspect.......

If any residue is left behind you are probably doing more harm than good.

I got a can of MAF cleaner at advanced auto, it was like 3 bucks.
