I've got an 89 SHO, the redline is at 7000-7200rpms. Somebody told me that I probably shouldn't go over about 5500. Does anybody here have an idea about how much my engine might be able to handle? Thanks!

Evidently that "somebody" doesn't know about the POWER of SHO. That is their redline from factory you are fine taking her there unless you got a knock or some other odd noise coming from the engine I wouldn't worry about hitting that 7k mark. Later

You can go to 7000 as often as you like.. staying at 7000 for extended periods of time isn't advised. With regular maintenance and oil changes with good quality oil your car will last a damn long time. Whoever told you 5500 was the highest advisable RPM probably has a V8 mustang or something like that which has a lower redline. If you're gonna go up high in revs, you may as well shift at 6500-6800 since there isn't much to gain by going all the way to 7000-7300.

With my old LPM - I would bounce it off the 8k rpm mark on occasion. The SHO makes it's power at 6-6.5k rpm. As long as you don't make a habbit of driving around with it wrapped out - it'll handle it. I would make it a point to shift around 7k (when racing or screwing around), especially if you don't have UPD's.

I've had no problems shifting occasingly at 6.5k rpms in my '90. I think the engine will handle it fine as long as the maint is kept up.
It's the accessories I worry about.

Does anyone know if the A/C will cut out at high RPM's or does it only repsond to the throttle position?

I have a Ford Technical newsletter from the SHO's early days that describes that the engine was designed for an 8,500 rpm redline, but the 7,300 rpm rev limiter (cuts out injectors as necessary to limit rpms) was implemented to protect the accessories.

The individual that said to limit revs to 5,500 rpm only wanted a better chance to beat you in a race. The SHO engine does not even reach its power peak until 6,200 rpm. Repeated runs to the 7,300 limiter have apparently not shortened the effective life of my engine. Oil changes every 3,000 miles with Castrol GTX haven't hurt wither. Feed her quality oil (not Pennzoil or Quaker State), change it frequently and let her rev.

my sho has about 240k miles on it and i race it every wkened on a track. i make at least 10 runs at the track not to mention street racing, i change my oil every 2k miles. no materhow much i beat on this engine it still pulls hard as ever, and now that i am instaling a NOS kit and the engine still holds up i am geting my engine gold plated, damn those YAMAHA enginers, how can they built such an high quality engine compared to ford engine.
