I am looking for ideas on how to refurbish the roof moldings on my car. It looks like the rubber coating is coming off and they are shiny underneath. I was think about popping them out, stripping them, and then painting them. Has anyone had any luck with this?

Also, does anyone have a fix or idea for the pealing chrome around the tail lights?

It's a 2012....an idea would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Nathan

There was a thread on the roof moldings about a year ago. Chrome peeling also in here somewhere. Try the search forums link above and run a seperate search for both items and click on the designate the Generation 4 SHO (2010-present) to focus the search on newer models. It will encompass all the subforums inside the Gen4 section.

I did try searching a number of different ways but I didn't have any luck on the roof moldings....the tail light chrome was an after thought when I was typing the roof molding post. I will try again I appreciate the insight.

Plasti dip or buy new parts, everything else is pretty much a waste of time/effort/money.

I think they all use the same chrome flakey stuff. Basically new units just start from scratch regarding sun, rain, debris beating them up. I think I saw someone strip them and paint the affected area black and I also think I saw someone install factory black or body color surround vs the chromed from regular Taurus?? It's been a little while.

I distinctly remember someone on the forum replacing or refurbishing theirs and talking about end caps for the molding. I can't seem to find it.

Thanks I appreciate your time. I Did find some info but it was older and I was hoping someone figured out a better way. The black car looks kinda silly with shiny roof moldings....

Yeah. You can try and strip and repaint or apply a flatter color. There should be new moldings still in inventory for Ford as well as aftermarket parts.

I used 1" carbon fibre tape for the roof runners. 10 dollars max cost.
Looks good and is an inexpensive fix.
Also, I wrapped the tail lights with the crappy chipped chrome with a smoke film edge to edge. That fixes that. 5 bucks in film to wrap them.

Do you have any pics....I was kicking around the idea of the carbon tape on the roof moldings. Has it held up¿

The molding look better than I thought they would to be honest. How wide of tape did you have to use and do you wrap it under?

Thanks I appreciate the pictures.

I ended up painting the rain moldings, tail lights, and the grill. (I forgot to get a picture of the rain molding though) Turned out not too bad though.

My *** was twitching and just said ***** it. Everything looked good on the car except the roof rail moldings. Cracking and fading. Every time I walked by the car they just stood out.

Two new roof moldings installed at Ford is $452.00.
