What I thought was a bad starter wasn't and I now think it is the ring gear. Sooooo, I guess the replacement engine is going in now and I need ideas on what should be done at the same time.

The motor I have has ~60k on it and appears to have had new plugs and wire recently. I have a timing belt, wp and cps sensor. What about the clutch? I do not plan of drag racing this car. Is the OEM stuff Ok for most use?

Anything else?

Is the ring gear really chewed up, or missing some teeth? When playing with Chevys the gear would get pretty bad, but still work as long as there was enough meat for the starter pinion to engage. Even after missing a few teeth, as long as the starter didn't just happen to try to engage at that spot it would work. Why don't you think the starter is the problem?

Actually I looked at the ring gear and it doesn't look bad. I was trying to start the car and could hear the starter spin but not engage.

Got a rebuilt starter and it does the same thing.

No teeth are missing that I can see.

Paul, most rebuilt starters could be considered poorly rebuilt starters. Perhaps try getting another one? I had one time where I didn't get a good starter until my 3rd trip to the parts store.

there was an issue with the number of teeth on the starters; apparently some years had a different pinion. I'm sure someone has better details on this.

I've been thinking that my self as the ring gear looks good to me. I am going to take the starter out and make sure the bendix is extending all the way out.

The starter I had had 12 teeth this one does too.

Is the starter spinning without engaging the flywheel? That would either be a failing bendix on the starter or an incorrect starter that doesn't have the ability to engage the flywheel. You should suspect the flywheel only if you remove the stater and find several missing teeth where the starter pinion is trying to engage.
