Guys,
In searching the forum, it looks like there are 3 or 4 (or 50) extensive threads on the MTX and whether there are parts and cross-use of parts.

Is there any way to pull all this information together into a special thread or perhaps it's own unique forum?

The reason I ask is that our cars aren't getting any younger, and I am thinking we need a 'clearing house' so we can all have access to what parts we can get for the MTX in our car. (maybe the shims' too as I heard that you can use motorcycle shims on our cars?? but have never tried to verify this)

Does this sound reasonable? (building some database or special thread for the mtx) If so, what help can I provide?
If this has already been done by someone, could you kindly point me at it, as I didn't find it.
Thanks
Mark

you can use old yamaha shims from quads and bikes w/e, I was also told by a yamaha dealer that bmw's use the same shims. As long as they measure the same diameter you can use them. the yamaha shims are the old ones though, new quads use a 7mm shim i think.

Sooner or later, the world will literally RUN OUT of MTX-IV transaxles. The only people left standing will be those with quaifes and those who get immunized for diffpin-ejectitis.

I'd like to know what bearings and what not are still available. I'm still a tranny noob, but about to get a course on rebuilding one here shortly!

I have no garage now, so I guess I'm doing the build in the basement.. lol :( Wish I woulda came up with Storm to Beth's place a few weeks back...

REally? Ok.. I am gonna pass that along to a couple friends of mine... We out here in the NW hadn't heard that particular tidbit with confirmation..
So that would be way cool..

I hate scrounging out of old engines.. and that is what we were getting close to..

This is exactly why I asked the question I did.. I am good on electrical stuff, so this mechanical stuff is kinda not what I deal with usually.. I prefer to track down the electronic issues with the cars (not that they have any anymore.. heh heh).. But getting parts... What parts work? What are available, what isn't and what can we replace it with if the original (syncro's & blocking rings) isn't available anymore...

Short of dragging your ass out the door by the ears - I tried to get you to go . . . ! And if it weren't for your newly arrived little-one, I might have even done that ! ! ! !

Beth can verify this, but the internal bearings rarely fail. A few OE-sourced bearings are still available through a few scattered Ford dealers, and some OE-replacements are available through Timken. Looking on SHONut's website will give you some idea of what's currently readily available.

Eric, if they're out there, I'll find them . . . . :thumb:

Verified.

Also, most of the internal bearings are available. You just have to know what numbers to look under. ;) One of these days I'll let the cat out of the bag. :)

You could but you have to remember that setting up a machine, tooling costs, etc. is E-X-P-E-N-S-I-V-E. More than most would pay to have a batch made up.

Bizzy,
I seem to recall you did some special rebuilds on the MTX with special parts, do you still do that? If so, can you tell us a little about it? I am thinking about having Nick do a quaife install for me and want a really good MTX in the car as it will be my daily driver.. My 'toy' was rebuilt about 25k ago, but is normal and is a little notchy at this point, so am mulling what to do about it.. The car has 220 on it, so I am going to pull the engine and re-ring it, maybe bore it out to a 3.2, as it has been so flawless that I know I got a 'perfect' car setup.. You know, one of those cars that just never gives you issues and never breaks down and strands you... So I made a decision that I am never going to part with it.. Just keep it going as long as I can... So it'll be my toy now instead of my daily.. So I am doing some research so I can keep up with the parts I'll need...

If you're talking about Josh's HD gear sets, yes, I installed a set of those in Lupo's car. It was an interesting experience to say the least. They were a true vision of beauty. The second batch of those were pretty much "plug 'n' play" type parts, the first batch slight modification to the case was required where the input shaft goes.

The 2 best things I can suggest for your daily driver if you plan on keeping her forever are:

1. Get a Quaife
2. Change your trans fluid every 2 or 3 oil changes. It's only 3 quarts so it's not like it would turn into a major investment and it will make your transmission oh so happy.

Change the fluid every 6000-9000 miles? Serious?? I'm doing it every 24k right now.. I thought that was often...

Are these HD the cryo ones? Or something like that? I've lurked for so long that my memory of past posts is sketchy sometimes...

Back when I had my 91, I changed it every other oil change (3,500 to 4,000 miles per oil change so every 7,000 to 8,000 miles). Yes, it may be considered excessive, but for me it was peace of mind much like the installing of the Quaife was.

The gears I was talking about were the HD gears from SHO NUT. I've also had gears/synchros/bearings cryo treated and gears treated with cermalube. I had a ton of gears cryo treated a few years back but they weren't as popular as I had anticipated so I've been sitting on about $500 worth for the last 3 years.

Biz - for the internal bearings on the MTX, can you give me an idea of how many are ball bearings, and how many are tapered roller type bearings?

For example, I know that the bearings that the differential rides on are tapered rollers because I had to get replacements for my Quiafe install (first ever batch BTW).

I suppose you know why I'm asking . . . zak

Internally, the input shaft, 5th/reverse gear shaft, 1st/2nd-3rd/4th gear shaft each have two tapered roller-bearings just like the differential - one each set into the two case-halves.

Obvious newbie here (to a SHO and SHOForum):

What is a "Quaife?"

What about using Redline ATF in the SHO MTX? I have a 1984 Tempo with 350,000 miles on it, original engine, MTX, and I've used Redline since it had about 175,000. I broke a clutch cable on the way home one day about a year ago, and I was able to shift it (carefully) without a clutch, so it must be holding up. I know, of course, that the Tempo MTX wasn't made by the same company as the SHO MTX, but...what about a high performance race-condition ATF like Redline?

quaife is a torque biasing differential, its a wonderful mod thats no longer made, but I think some are still available. It replaces the horrible stock diff that liek to eject diff pins through its case. alsi from what iv herd redline atf in the mtx is great stuff, however i just read today in some article that they didn't recommend it. Im sure bizzy will chime in on that. If shes says its good, its good.:thumb:
