im replacing the cd player in my SHO, and i need to know a few things. do i need any special adapter parts? does the ford premium system (not jbl) have an amp i need to bypass? i was planning on putting the cd player on top and coin/ cupholder below, it seems that everyone does this. is the taurus wiring harness different than the SHO or is that what i need to get? thanks- chris ahl

To make things simple, just go to either Circuit City or Best Buy and tell them the year, make and model of your car. Tell them you need the Ford AMP INTEGRATOR HARNESS. Even though you only have the Ford Premium Sound, there is still 1 amp in your trunk you'll still need to bypass.

I don't think Ford started making radio's that detach with keys (1 hole in each corner) until 91 or 92, but I could be wrong. If you have a hole in each corner of your radio, do yourself a favor and pick up so called Ford Keys (look like a U-shaped coat hanger) to remove your radio. They are available at Walmart.

This topic has been discussed many times. If you use the search feature (top right corner), you'll find answers to similar questions. If you need help during the installation, post your questions here.
Good luck!

You don't NEED to bypass the amp. Since when did Gen Is not use JBL for premium sound?

Actually, they're called DIN Radio Removal Tools wink Pretty much all DIN radios have that type of release, Saab, some Volvo, Mazda, Ford; and the Euro cars like the BMW and Mercedes use European Radio Removal Tools.

i do want to bypass the amp so do i get the ford amp integrator harness, does that one bypass it? i dunno, my gen 1 has "ford premium sound", the only thing ive found so far is that the back speackers are 4x7's and not 6x9s (im putting infinity 6x9s in tho. will everything fit fine in the radio holes without any mounting stuff. the cd player looks like a single din slot but the radio looks bigger. thanks - chris

Do it the easy way:

1)Pull you existing radio

2)Look in the hole to you left, there are a set of connectors that look like the gray plug that was hooked to you existing radio.

3)Get a STANDARD (non JBL) wiring kit (with 2 connects that look the same)

4)Wire up you new radio and plug the the new connectors into the plugs to the LEFT not the ones that the old radio was pluged into.

5)Listen to you toonz!

When Ford put the Premium and JBL wiring in a car they left the existing standard wiring in place. The wiring goes from the radio, back to the amp, back up the the connectors next to the radio, and then out to the speakers. All cars have the standard wiring but Premium and JBL cars have extra wiring added, not different wiring.

I think they use the same amp... just add another for the JBL system. Not too sure on this though. Sorry I cannot remember the power rating of the amp.

The factory amps are not worth reusing!!

I assumed he wanted to bypass the amp if there was one there...that's why I said he would need to bypass it....of course you don't have to...you can still purchase that amp integrator harness and just not use the 3rd harness to bypass the one in the trunk. My old 89 did NOT have the JBL sound system, it had the Ford Premium Sound and let me tell you, it's NOT worth running your speakers. This amp is still made by JBl, not Ford. Bypass it.

Quadmasta I remember doing a job on an audi I found out that either aiwa keys worked to remove the factory radio shrug which was very odd.

The package should have come with three harnesses total. Besides the two that are hooked up behind your radio, there should be one that intercepts the harness going into the amplifier which is in your trunk on the back of your rear seats. Unplug the harness on the left side of the amp, plug it into the harness your bought and do the same for the harness to the right of the amp.

In other words, the amp bypass harness replaces the amp you have in the trunk.

the package came with 2...i got the integrator harness. it has a harness for power, and a harness with some adapter on it for all the speakers. basicly can i not bypass the amp without that 3rd one?

i called magnolia hi-fi and they said they dont even have a harness that bypasses the amp. they said to hard wire from one end of the amp to the other. the thing im afraid of is that adapter on the speaker wires. does it convert the frequences or something like that? so confused

if i didnt want to spend anymore money, essentially, i could cut out that adapter on the speaker wires, and hard wire some wires to bypass the amp...and everything would be running off my head unit, is this right? thanks - chris ahl

happy 4th :D

They sold you the wrong kit ..... BUT it works, don't get me wrong. The kit I sell is made from METRA, PART # 70-5514. This kit sells for around $50.

Second ..... DO NOT TRY TO ELEMINATE THE FACTORY AMP YOURSELF. They make the bypass cable for a reason. You can walk into any radio shop and ask to purchase it without the kit.

I've got two '89 SHO's one with premium sound and one with the JBL system in it and the amps are different. The Premium sound amp is fairly small and kinda lame looking but the amp in the JBL system looks massive ( whether it is stock or not I don't know ) it has large fins covering the whole thing and the Premium sound one looks like a plain black box. Maybe I'll put pics up of both if I got time.
