Is there a write up some where on how to replace a rear coil on a 97 SHO. I did a search but I'm looking for something a little more detailed so I don't end up taking the whole upper intake off.

You can remove the surge tank without removing the upper intake. I removed the whole kit 'n kaboodle the first time I did it because the intake needed to be cleaned but the 2nd time I had to replace a coil I just removed the surge tank.

There's a write-up over on v8sho.com that details the procedure, I think it even has pictures. It shows how to take the upper intake off as well but like I said, you don't need to go that far, thanks to the rubber couplings between the surge tank and intake. After you remove all the brackets (don't forget the PITA ones under/behind the surge tank), removed all attached hoses and loosened the couplings you may need to give the surge tank a good whack with a rubber mallet to loosen it from the couplings. :p

I always found it much easier to at least loosen the lower half of the upper intake to get the upper mounted to the surge tank. I've seen people do it that way, but I like to take the complete upper off. Seemed easier to me. I'm down to about 45 mins to change a back coil and last time I was in there I moved all of my "new" coil to the rear so hopefully I won't have to worry about them anytime soon.

If you just leave the surge tank in one piece "45 mins" quickly becomes 15.

To speed things up more take the drivers side rear brace and use it a s a paper weight. You can also take the ground strap stud that is on the passenger side bottom brace and move it to the top, screwed onto the tank. Use a washer between the strap and nut and it easily comes off.

Thanks I appreciate your help. If you didn't respond to my post I would have pulled the whole intake off. After reading your response I was able to get to the rear coli in about 45 min.

It didn't look like it would fit last time I looked, but I really wasn't trying to short cut it anyway. I was taking the lowers off to clean the butterflies. Hopefully I won't have to do it again while I have the car. I put all of the coil that I had replace in the last year on the back. Now I only have 2 that are original and they are up front and in 5 and 8 so they are easy to get to. Thanks for the tip though.
