Just got my '93 atx with 115k miles on the clock. Was told that a 60k service was done at 108k. Well, the front main seal seems to be leaking. How big of a job is it to replace? Am I better off waiting until the next 60k service?

Well. That depends on how much work you like to do...you have to pull everything off of the front of the motor. None of it is really "hard", just work. How bad is it leaking? And how sure are you that it is the front main?

Same steps as replacing the timing belt but in this case, the belt doesn't have to be removed entirely. Just taken off the sprocket and placed out of the way to make room. Not very familiar with the ATX drive belt system but on the MTX, it can be done with just removing the top and bottom timing covers and the accessory pulleys without having to take out the accessory brackets themselves. All the sprockets need to be realigned to specs and I turn the cam sprockets with a 17mm open end wrench using the sprocket spokes to grab onto.

It should have been done with the 60k service. But, can't do anything about that now.

How mechanically inclined are you, to do the work yourself? It isn't hard, but is time consuming. You have to strip the front of the motor down, pull the timing belt, ect.

You could wait until the next 60k, but the leak will probably become substantially worse by then.

Even though the 60k was done, it is not hard to install a seal improperly so it leaks. If you are sure it is the front main leaking and you are mechanically inclined then it's not that hard of a job, a few hours at best. Just make sure you use a motorcraft or natinal seal to replace it with. Some Fel Pro have been known to leak soon after replacing.

I have seen more oil pans leak than main seals. Make sure it is the seal because the oil pan seals quite close to that as well.

I'm sure it's the front main. I'll do the work myself (I'm so mechanically inclined I'm almost vertical, lol), looking for a guide or something to go by to make it as simple as possible.
