I did a valve adjustment yesterday on a 93 ATX w/154K, the owner had complained of lots of engine noise. During start up I heard at least one chain clattering. Once the valve covers were removed the RH chain tensioner plastic/nylon strip was missing. I could not determine whether the LH chain tensioner plastic/nylon strip was missing as well, the chain was still tight on the cam gears and I could not see the tensioner very well on the LH head. My first question is what is the procedure to replace the tensioners without removing the camshafts, I've read in a forum thread that this can be done but the procedure wasn't posted, the SHO manual shows it done while reinstalling the cams only. Second question would it be recommended to replace the chains? Third and final question if new new cam chains are install with the new tensioner can it be done without removing the cams? MUCH appreciated in advance!

I was going to replace my chain tensioners since tha plastic was also worn through, but instead I decided to swap my cylinder heads with another set I had. However, I did examine the possibilities of having to swap the tensioner without removing the cams, and I thich you could do it by removing the 2 screws that hold the rear cam sprockets. You may be able to do it by just removing the intake side.
I would compress and hold down the tensioner with a tie wrap.

Take a look at it again, it looks like it could be done this way.

Thanks rktmn,

That will be my battle plan, I'll take the exhaust sprocket off the front head and the intake sprocket off the backside.
