I wouldn't worry if it gets up to the O - my radiator fan dosen't even come on until the needle is in between the N and O. *Generally* once it goes past the N is when you worry.
Course, it dosent come on at all right now frown

Scott, yes the rad-fan comes on fine.

On my way to work, I noticed a few things.
1. The temp gauge still got to (but not above) the "H" (this is about a 3 mile trip-granny shifting).
2. The car has horrible hesitation at first. I will press the gas at idle, and the RPM's drop to about 2-300 then finally start to rise. Sometimes the rpm's go so low it just dies.
3. When the RPM's are around 2-3000 or so sometimes there is a loud screeching noise.

Where is that screeching noise coming from? Have you checked the codes? It sounds like you may have a bad throttle position sensor and/or idle air control valve. You have more than one problem.

Scott, I really can't tell where the screeching noise is from. Somewhere under in the engine bay. For the codes, no I haven't run them-but I will. TPS was replaced during my 60k about 4000 miles ago. I'll check out the other thing

As for the police grill, I don't think that would make any difference since I have this:

I turned the heat on full blast today on my way to school. When it finally warmed up the engine temp got to the H, and then the heat finally got warn, and it dropped the guage down to about halfway. I'm still wondering if it is a bad water pump. Would that throw a code? I have a CE light, but it has pretty much been on intermittantly since I got the car.

If you aren't getting any heat out of the heater and the temp gauge is above the first line then there either isn't enough coolant in the system or the water pump isn't pumping it or there is a major clog in your block cooling system.

There is enough coolant. I think the same things-either bad water pump, or like you said, a block somewhere in the hose or something. I don't really know how to check either of those.

To check your heater core, disconnect it and connect a garden hose up to it. Be careful of the pressure you apply. Has stop leak ever been added to the cooling system? It will **** a heater core.

If the water pump pulley is spinning and there is water in the system, the pump is moving water. The only moving part in the pump is the shaft and its very solidly mounted stainless steel impeller. You temperature gauge's behavior sounds like you have air still in the system. Did your thermostat have the jiggle valve and did you install it with the valve at the top?

The t-stat did NOT have a jiggle valve. I used the one that shofear92 said to use (Napa p/n 219). I don't think it's just the guage, because the engine is really hot to the touch as well. This is still a mystery. I might have to take it into a shop and get a diagnosic test run, and let them figure out what the problem is.

It sounds like we might have the same problem. I decided that the noise I'm hearing is related to the overtemp. When I run the codes I get ECT and IAT sensors out of range. You should try the diagnostics, http://dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html
I think the dealer charges me $80 for the same thing.

I know this may sound crazy but check your Alt. I was having all sorts of heating problems (and an engine squeal) too and after I changed out a weak Alt everything was fine. Any auto parts store can check it quickly and for free. You may want to try a radiator flush "just in case" someone did add stop leak. Might get lucky and flush out a clog.
