So I have had this problem since day 1 but have just got around to taking a look at it. Last weekend I took off the IAC and cleaned it with Carb/Choke cleaner and got alot of carbon build up out and let it dry and reinstalled it.

By the way yes I did pull the codes just don't have them right at the moment. I disconnected the battery for 15 minutes to allow the computer to erase the stored codes also before starting after reinstalling. Upon reinstalling the cleaned IAC it ran fine for a minute and then started to idle surge constantly until it would die.

I have come to the conclusion that the IAC was on it's way out and cleaning it just made the symptoms worse.

It has never had issues other than the low idle surge which was not at all this bad until now and the A/C compressor clutch which I have already disconnected. So just looking for a few opinions before throwing new parts on it, and yes I know it is hard to diagnose without the codes so I apologize.

Any help is truly appreciated,
Matt......:salute:

matt clean your maf with electrical cleaner just to make sure something didn't get it dirty!

Did that about a month ago with the MAF cleaner from Checker Auto. I can take another look and try cleaning it again this weekend. I did however order a working used IAB/IAC from RCM just to make sure it is a faulty IAC. For 20 bucks I can always have an extra lying around I guess.

Oh yes and upon removing the old IAC I did notice that there was no RTV or sealant on the gasket so I'm curious as to if I need to put some on when I put the new/used IAC back on?

It looks like just a normal gasket to me. But I guess we will see what happens when I get the new one.

The IAC gaskets don't need RTV, nor do any of the intake gaskets; they don't see any pressure, and at worst a vacuum. Just torque them down good 'n tight and they'll be fine. As long as there is a gasket there, they're fine.

Have you checked the ground cables yet? Wiggle them to see if the symptoms increase/decrease.

I will be wiggling and jiggling everything I see this weekend to make sure it's not a vacuum leak or something simple like that. Just wish my part was shipped by now.

After you disconnect the battery, you need to reset the idle speed by letting the car run for at least 5 minutes immediately after you start it the first time after the battery is reconnected. If you don't do that, my experience is that idle speed will be very erratic.

Also, put all the accessories (stereo, MAX AC, lights, put it in drive if ATX, step on brakes, etc.) on within 60 seconds to let the ECU adjust for those loads. Then, drive the shit out of it!

EDIT: Also, did you check the big ground strap at the rear of the intake? I remember I had a huge problem with my car dying at idle when that strap got loose.

sounds like a vac leak to me.

spray some brake clean around the intake manifold and see if the idle surges wherever you spray it. if it surges at a certain spot, thats your vac leak.

But none of this happened till I took off the IAC and cleaned it. And the Idle surge was pretty much non existent most of the time just once in a while.
