Okay, I'm looking at getting a 2-way Remote Start/Alarm system for my new toy (2002 Pathfinder LE) and I have a few choices. First I was looking at the Commando 2-way system (www.commandoalarms.com) but then I found some better quality units for comparable prices. So here's my question...which one of these is the best and/or which one should I get??

1) Clifford Matrix RSX 3.5 2-way (4-button LCD Pager) System

2) Viper 791XV 2-way (4-button LCD Pager) System

3) Avital 4400 2-way (2-button LCD Pager) System

I can get each one in the $170-$200 range (no installation), so price isn't much of an issue when comparing. I'd just like to know which is the best unit and any suggestions/advice you guys (or gals!) might be able to offer. Also, if you have any other systems that you think would be better, please feel free. Thanks in advance!

Here's a recent thread which discussed various remote start systems in general: http://www.shoforum.com/showthread.php?t=38767

To quickly reiterate one of the points I made in that thread, with Viper and Clifford being well-known name brands you probably can't go wrong. Avital, I'd personally never heard of, but a quick search for Avital on eBay gives me the impression that it's an "el cheapo" brand.

Basically anything DEI. Avital is also a subsidiary of DEI. Personally I'd go with the 791xv. Also, if you're doing the install yourself let it be known that this vehicle is equipped with a transponder type engine immobilizer theft system. You will need a bypass module. This vehicle equipped with two start wires, both must be powered in order for vehicle to start when cold. Other than that, it's a pretty straight forward install, just take it step by step and pace yourself. Make sure the connections are secure and you should have many trouble free years of operation.

*Also the 791 has a 4th aux output channel. If you want to remotely vent both front windows and/or have automated window up when armed I highly suggest the DEI 530T automated window module (it's da *******!). Good luck w/ everything.

Yes, I need to get the DEI Universal Bypass Module to use it with the Pathfinder. Just another expense...this is really starting to add up. I'm also planning on having it professionally installed because I did the last remote starter install (on my 94 ATX) and it was a PITA. Plus this is going to be more complicated with the factory alarm and immobilizer system being bypassed.

I was looking at CompuStar systems as well, but I've heard mixed reviews on them and from what I've read/heard about DEI, I really can't go wrong with either the Clifford or the Viper. So I'll just try to get one of those and see which I can get cheaper. Thanks guys.

I had an Avital remote start/alarm in an explorer that I owned and I was very happy for the 3 years I owned it.

In fact I was dissapointed when my local dealer who installed it had dropped the line and I couldnt get them to install a new one in my SHO.

oh well, I ended up with a compustar and have been pleased.

Just my 2 cents

BTW-

you mentioned prices without installation..

If you havent done these kinds of systems before, I would HIGHLY recomend you have it professionally installed. :thumb:

i think vipers are a good brand and are priced really well. the only thing i dont like about them and some of the others are there is alot more wires to hook up and it makes it harder to do a clean job since there is a satallite relay pack to stuff up under the dash with the main brain. sucks when the isnt any room. the shop me and my friend own, we use compustar. a really straight forward system and it has internal relays, but the brain is slightly larger than most others. all compustars also work with a manual tranny. each system you mentioned has there advantages and disadvantages so choose wisely. just my 2 cents.
