Relocating Oil Filter For Easier Maintenance

im pretty sure this is a maintenance topic (at least it is on my opinion). now i know this has been brought up before and i know im tired as **** of getting oil on my starter. i think its even a safety issue, if you were to have a spark down there all the residue could go up in flames. but who here has relocated their filter with a professional kit (i know jc whitney sells one but i dont know who else). where can you relocate it to safely? any recommendations? thanks in advance.

Yea the stock oil filter location is no good. I've tried blocking off the starter but it's a PITA. And to make matters worse I recently had the A/C thingy (condensor??) down there replaced. The new one is a bit longer and it's near impossible to fit the filter through there.

Looks like a quality unit to me. I'm doing my Upper 60K this weekend. thumb I might install the relocator then or just wait a week.

I have yet to look for a suitable mounting location. From what I understand GenI's have better mounting options near the airbox.

Guys,

Millions and millions of Tauri and Sables have been getting oil dumped on their starters for 17 years. It doesn't hurt anything and it's not a safety issue. My $.02

Dave, no its definately not a major safety issue, but it has the potential to be one. its easy to slip when replacing the filter and cause sparks down there. ive done it and im sure im not the only one. but you have to admit its messy and a pain in the ass when you drain that filter out. know of any good mounting locations?

Oil is not flammable. It is combustible. And it does not readily combust. It takes a lot of heat to ignite it. There is no way in **** a little spark from the starter can do the job.

I can add this, my very first time changing the oil in my ATX, I had to use a filter wrench due to how tight it was. Well, after I loosened it, I tried to take the filter wrench off and caused a major arcing when my metal filter wrench hit the starter. It melted an area on my wrench and caught some tape on fire. I thought I just burned my battery or starter up! Luckily, everything was fine but now I'm extra careful.

well youre right but its still a
convenience issue. it can still be dangerous otherwise poking around a live wire with that metal oil filter though. any mounting suggestions?

but just so you all know, im not paranoid about my car exploding, but convenience-wise i would like it moved and regardless of the combustibility of the oil it does crud up the connections. i had an instance last february where my car wouldnt start because the connections at the starter were all crudded up, even though i had full power inside the car. so thats where im comin from. maybe some of you have had the same problem

I'm using the large filter and after seeing what a mess it made I started poking a hole in the old filter at it's lowest point. The filter will drain almost completely while the pan is draining.

I then wrap a shop rag around the filter as I unscrew it. I also lay rags on the starter to catch anything I might miss.

I bought a remote oil filter kit from Summit racing but have not put it on yet, because I can't find a good place to mount it yet. You do'nt want too long of a hose for the oil to go through.

I suppose you could always unhook the battery before you play sparky..... I usually will spray the starter down with non-chlorinated brake cleaner when done.

I do the same thing, it also cleans the underside of the engine very well .

would the length of oil line hurt the oil pump, also how long have original oil pumps lasted in our engines? Would a double filter relocator kit hurt the engine by dropping the oil pressure too much? I will call jegs and ask them but I am not sure they will be able to tell me.

you prolly touched the batt cable to the starter. grounding batt to frame is not good on you, and other things.

Ive touched the starter solenoid cable with a wrench. OUCH!!! I had fireworks in my garage! Just disconnect the battery next time u go there.

Ditto. And if I can get compressed air on there (usually can), then I follow up with that. Nice and clean.
