So I scratched the bank 1 intake cam pulling out the old seal, so i did a sleeve to try to repair it(after i tried reassembling it with the scratch; it leaked bad). The sleeve didnt have instructions with it, but i basically pressed it on untill it was about to touch the head with the "driving on" part of the sleeve. I left that part on because i didn't see a way of removing it without removing the cam. Well, it still leaked. So i pulled it back apart and removed the seal and it appeared to be riding on the groove in the sleeve where the "driving on" part ends and the sleeve begins. It won't drive on any farther without hitting the head. I have already driven it on a bit more and reassembled it and it still freakin' leaks(it didnt go on much more). Has anyone run into this problem sleeving the cams before? I'm probably going to pull the cam and try to get the sleeve on more and cut off the "driving" part of the sleeve....but i'm not looking foward to it. it would be the 4th or 5th time i've had this %@#ing thing apart for an oil leak(that i caused) :booboo:

I think I would try to find a good used cam and replace it, or have a machine shop polish the scratch out if it is not too deep. That would take less time than repeated disassemby.

If this is for your ATX, shoot me a PM. I have a set of KOB (3.2L) cams that I'm not doing anything with.

You're supposed to drive it on so that the smooth part of the sleeve is where the seal rides. If you drive it too far, it won't do any good.

Had to do one on Frederick's 89 for that same reason..... Been about two years or so and he hasn't reported any additional leaking.

That groove where the sleeve and the driving face of the sleeve meet is where you seperate the sleeve from the "driving on face". The seal lip should not be riding in that groove or the seal will not seal. Pop that sleeve back off and reinstall a new one but not so far.

maybe I got this wrong....because there were no instructions with the sleeve. I installed the sleeve with that to the inside(toward the head). That must be where i screwed up. I thought you drove the sleeve on and then installed the seal

I had to use Google to get the directions from the manufacturer's website.

I'd suggest you do that also. At almost $30 per sleeve, using Google is cheap.

Start at Federal Mogul/Timken/National. IIRC, they're the maker of the Redi-Sleve.

Hi Steve, hope all is well. Yes, the redi-sleeve is working just fine. Although I can't believe how fast 2 years go by... I'm way overdue on getting caught up with you.
