The AXOD transmission family has 4 different variants, improved and changed over the years:
AXOD = mechanical shifting, used in '86-'91
DN5s
AXOD-E = electrical shifting/TCC solenoid version of the AXOD, used in '91-'92
DN5s
AX4S = basically an AXOD-E with improved lubrication, differentiated from the AX4N in that it is synchronized, used in '93-'03 Taurus/Sable/Continental/Windstars
AX4N/4F50N = non-synchronized version of the AX4S, used in some Taurus/Sable models from '94-'03, all '96-'99 SHOs, '95-'00 V8 Continentals, and the Windstar/Freestar/Monterey. Basically a heavier-duty, non-synchronized version of the AX4S.

If you have a stock '93 ATX (and chances are
very good that you do), you definitely have an AX4S, which is a member of the AXOD/AXOD-E family. And actually, it's not the same as the regular Taurus's AX4S from the same year, as the SHO version was unique (in some probably minor way which escapes me at the moment), hence the reason for the "SHO" stamped into the pan.
