You have the 93 version of the SHO-specific AX4S. Accept no substitutes except the 94/95 upgrades.

Probably a busted forward clutch.

rockauto.com isnt a bad place to check for parts they've worded for me so far, when you rebuild make sure all cluches lay flat and dont have ANY kinks or even the slightest bend

I actually found a manual I had stashed away that I was about to post for sale with a few other things. I don't know what they go for, but I certainly don't need it. It's in great condition.

well the trans donest have any large pieces in the pan its just a bit of burnt fluid. it says AXOD SHO on the bottom of the pan so its the 4 spd axod-e? is there any way to replace that forward shift piston without pulling the trans and guts. can i pull the valve body and replace it?

i found trans specific manual on ebay for 25.00.

No. READ what I wrote above. Don't screw around trying to second guessing what I said, just follow it.

No. Replacement of either requires the transmission to be removed and disassembled.

Don't wish to burst your enthusiasm, but if you can't follow simple guidance as given above, there isn't much hope you will successfully rebuild an AX4S.

so what your saying is that your right and im wrong? so why does it have a 17 bolt pan on it that says what it is? if they stamp AXOD on the pan but really its an AX4S why didn't they stamp that on there instead?

oh and i bet you have rebuilt tons of transmissions in your lifetime. i rebuilt semi transmissions for a living not car transmissions. so a bit of help and some courtesy goes a long way so you can go **** yourself projectsho89.

oh and for me smashing shos its the greatest feeling knowing that im taking something that you love and smashing it to **** and making it work better.

 Before you mouth off to a well known member on here again, be sure to search around... AX4N, AX4S, AXOD-E and the 4F50N are the same damn transmission.

Got some attitude on this forum latley... considering ProjectSHO has about 6,000 more posts than you, has been here since 2001.... how many of these things do you think he's had his hands on?

This stuff isnt a Detroit Diesel ya know? my friend here in town is a heavy diesel mechanic and he thinks he knows it all too. Next time wait for all the diesel fumes to clear the room before you post.

Seriously tho, that trans was specific to 93, I've watched people try to put it into other year cars that were and it didn't work right. Ford was just too cheap to have another pan stamped or something, who knows. What I do know is that these "older guys" on here really know their shit. It's like the encylopedia of SHO around here.

And keep smashin SHO's! I don't care.. you keep increasing the value of mine.. thanks!

The AXOD transmission family has 4 different variants, improved and changed over the years:

AXOD = mechanical shifting, used in '86-'91 DN5s

AXOD-E = electrical shifting/TCC solenoid version of the AXOD, used in '91-'92 DN5s

AX4S = basically an AXOD-E with improved lubrication, differentiated from the AX4N in that it is synchronized, used in '93-'03 Taurus/Sable/Continental/Windstars

AX4N/4F50N = non-synchronized version of the AX4S, used in some Taurus/Sable models from '94-'03, all '96-'99 SHOs, '95-'00 V8 Continentals, and the Windstar/Freestar/Monterey. Basically a heavier-duty, non-synchronized version of the AX4S.

If you have a stock '93 ATX (and chances are very good that you do), you definitely have an AX4S, which is a member of the AXOD/AXOD-E family. And actually, it's not the same as the regular Taurus's AX4S from the same year, as the SHO version was unique (in some probably minor way which escapes me at the moment), hence the reason for the "SHO" stamped into the pan.

I think you should spend some more time in front of a computer. Not only will you learn something, but you'll learn how to type up a coherent post. His average is less than 2 posts a day and apparently for 2 consecutive days, he wasted 53% of his daily effort on this thread.

He is trying to help you. He can clearly see you're starting to go off track and he's steering you back. Excuse him if he points out the obvious. If that really bothers you... I suppose I better unsubscribe from this thread.
