I have a factory tape deck in my new plus. The lights work and it displays the radio numbers, but there is no sound. It does turn on and off, but neither radio nor the tape deck work. Any ideas?

The previous owner said that it work right up till we got there. He put a tape in to test the deck and it just froze. I got the tape out. I can hear a little bit of feedback if I turn the volume way up so I think the speakers are working correctly.
Thanks,
Eric

The 89-91 JBL head units with the up/down "flipper"-style volume control have electrolytic capacitors that have a 10-year service life after which they leak and damage the circuit board - unit is not repairable.

The 1992 units used better capacitors which won't leak. If you're interested in replacing it with a factory unit check out CincySHO used parts at:

Very informative Jim.

Its interesting that the radio went out last year (its a '91) meaning that was its 10 year life was over
