Hey all, hope everyone is safe and healthy! I recently went to Brakes plus (closest place to me) after replacing my PTU. I originally went to get an alignment, but they said I had a bad rack which would not hold an alignment. They said it had a bad bushing causing up and down movement. When I go up a driveway I can definitely hear what that would sound like, but I’m looking for advice if this doesn’t sound like what a bad rack would sound like or do, or if they’re trying to squeeze some money out of me. I’ve seen a couple of videos on youtube of what to do and it does not look all that hard, but one video showed reprogramming it and all that, which I have no clue how to do. Should I have it professionally done? Should I do it myself? Thank you!

What year is your SHO? By bushing, do they mean the rubber isolators where the rack mounts to the subframe? 'Cause for my 2010 those are like $70 (there is an upper and a lower, each are about $35) where a steering gear is over $1000. (see #3 & #4 here https://www.tascaparts.com/auto-par...e/steering-cat/steering-gear-and-linkage-scat) I don't know of any other 'bushing' that would affect alignment. The rack itself (the part inside the steering gear) is usually just a metal bar with teeth on it that interlock with a gear on the steering shaft, and 4 'ball' joints (which are replaceable) inner & outer tie rod ends.

Just found my 2010 SHO PP has a cracked Rack and Pinion main housing.
It is cracked between the steering gear and the inside casting after the mounting bolt on the drivers side. I mean, it's cracked around in a circle like a broken glass straw. Man.... was working on my CATALYIC converter and took a close look at the rack housing.
When someone turns the steering wheel right and left, you can see it open up about 1/8".
Thought I could epoxy it but decided to order a replacement unit. I hope they accept the core back! The damage is hard to see when it's static. But, prying up on the housing with a screw driver showed subluxation happening because it was broken clean and all the way around! Jeez!!!! :)
(Last of the damage to fix from my hitting a tree at 15MPH due to black ice)
Explains my recurring dream about the car losing control for no reason. I guess my guardian angels were telling me to take a closer look at the rack before catastrophic failure occured. Thank you!
