The printing content on the radiator shield has long gone. Wondering what is there R-12 or R-134. Anybody there has 93ATx please help. I would also looking for the shield if you have extra one.

Without the radiator sight shield, you can check a couple of other things to determine the refrigerant type:

1. Look on the tubing to and from the accumulator/drier canister (rear of engine compartment along firewall, towards passenger side strut tower). If there is a yellow "non-cfc" label on it, then you use R-134a.

2. The tubing to and from the A/C condenser (the condenser is in front of the radiator, the tubing is by the radiator filler tube), as well as the tubing to the compressor should also have the yellow labels.

3. The A/C compressor clutch from the factory is gold in color for R-134a systems. BUT, that might not hold true if you have a remanned compressor.

If there aren't any labels you MIGHT have R-12, but I don't believe there were any Taurii in '93 that used R-12. If you don't find any labels, I'd have a A/C shop take a look at it before you try anything...

Check the fittings. R-134A fittings are the quick-disconnect type and are usually color coded blue and red. R-12 fittings are smaller and threaded, like your tire valve stems.

I'm pretty sure '93 was the last year for R-12, I converted last year to R134-A because my '93 had R-12.

My '93 had R12 originally but the previous owner had it converted to R134 but he never put the stickers on. A shop should be able to tell you for sure.

I have a friend who does a/c work and from what I've learned from him, R-12 is the old stuff that you can't buy anymore. R-134A is trash that doesn't work too well. Try getting something called Hotshot, it's supposed to be the replacement for R-12. He had it in his van (along with R-12) and it got down to around 29 degrees farenheit. But 134a is probably still quite decent (and better than my lack of a/c cause of the busted compressor wink ).

BTW: I have Hotshot in my '89

my 93 has r-12, I think. It blows cold as ****, so, I guess I'll stay with it till it craps out. How hard is it to convert over to 134? Is it a DIYer job?

FYI, all it takes to convert to r134 is you just screw on the 134 fittings.... the r12 fittings look like a schrader valve (tire valve style), and the r134a fittings screw on over the 12 fittings.... just 2, 1 high side, 1 low side.... Then evac and fill with r134, ice cold! The compressors are the same from 89-95 sho's, so 134 will and does work in either one..... as far as 134 being crappy, WRONG, I just put new o rings in 2 fittings on mine, and recharged it, ICE ICE COLD! GOOD LUCK, but the hotshot substitute also works very well, its not on the market, but is available by mail order (my father sells cars, and uses hotshot to top of systems)... GOOD LUCK!
