so if i have the engine at TDC with the #1 cyl. (which is in the back, on the glovebox side?) then with the dampner on, some mark should be at 0 on the stub on the lower timing cover? so then where should the dots on the cam sprockets be at 12 or 6 o clock? sorry for the lame questions, having bad mental block. thanks guys

cams at 12 o'clock, crank at about 5 o'clock. The dot on the lower timing pulley should be lined up with the dot on the oil pump.

If you put the dotted tooth on the timing gear on the index mark on the oil pump, the dampener will be at 0 TDC when it is installed.

Yep, that's #1 cylinder.

The cam index dots will be at 12 o'clock initially. One revolution of the crank will rotate the cams 1/2 turn, leaving them at 6 O'clock.

Ther have been many discussions to this question. I searched in this topic on "timing belt align" and member number "51" and found 24 posts. Please do the same and check the various discussions to see if one answers your question.

SDPATT,

Keep trying Scott, maybe someday it will sink in!

SVT,

If you will look at SDPATT's prior posts you will find pictures of the cams and crankshaft alignment that should be very reassuring as to the proper timing alignment.

Try iy, you'll like it! rangerj

take the spark pulg off cyl #1, rest a long 3/8 extention. using a breaker bar (19mm) turn crank so get the extention as high as you can. meaning cyl #1 is at the top of the cylender. when you replace the crank dampner (pully) the white mark should be a the O on the timing stub on the lower timing cover. note: 0 is not in the middle of the timing stub as i had pictured. BTW dont forget to replace the washer inbetween the crank timing sprocket and the crank dampner. someone i know REAL WELL did this, this week cuss and had to take back off the dampner and lower timing cover.

Dude..... you don't even have 30 posts on here and you're calling us an a-hole community? I understand where you're coming from with people making you mad, but people don't like to repeat themselves. You've gotta understand that the question you asked has been around atleast a few dozen times. It may have taken sdpatt 5 minutes to steer you in the right direction, however it would have taken him much longer to explain everything and hunt down all the good pictures for you. You should be grateful.

If you don't have a good bit of patience, the confidence to dive into the bulk of mechanical work yourself, or a boat load of money, you should sell the car. People are here to help and possibly give you sh*t, if they're having a bad day. We live in a world where some people pick on others to make themselves feel better. These people are going to be everywhere. Unfortunately some of them frequent here, but I assure you there are more decent heads than bad heads on here. Take it easy and good luck with everything. Just make sure to tighten the crank bolt sufficiently, or you will be in a world of hurt and possibly try to dick someone else over with the problems you created. 112-127 lb/ft.
