For those that know computers and internet connections and wireless, I have a question. I moved into an apartment the other day near campus. I don't have my own internet connection, but in my living room I can connect to someone else's. Can I get something that will maximize that availability to other parts of my apartment?

I really don't know anything about internet connections. My only other option is to get cable internet with my cable TV, but I rather not pay that if I don't have to. Plus that wouldn't be wireless, would it?

Thanks, I appreciate any help. :)

You need a wireless bridge to access the other wireless router, and connect the bridge to a new wireless router on a different channel for use in your apt.

Don't leech off of someone else's wireless access, that's lame.

Then again, serves the idiots right for not even using WEP.

lol not that wep is hard to crack anyways but yeah usin others internet is not the best idea lol... if they know a bit about computers they can just access ur computer if ur just lookin for a cheap decently fast internet i recommend DSL its like 10-15 a month and is perfect for surfin the net and some gamin lol but i doubt u do much of that. now most schools dont have a wireless system they go off the hardline then you can make it wireless with your own router... so i would doubt that the connection is from the school if u were even wonderin lol

I don't have a hard phone line here - don't really see the point as I pay enough a money for my cell phone already. :) So I guess that means DSL and dial-up (oh the horror!) is a no-go.

And I don't really see how using someone else's makes me lame. I would think it is the opposite, as I am saving myself $40 a month that could go towards other things, like tuition.

And beer.

no need, youre only 19 anyway... 20 soon, right?

EDIT: 20 today!!! happy birthday!!!... now its a happy birthday thread

Edit2: The other thing to consider about taking someone elses internet is what if they figure out people are leaching and put a block in... and say youre in the middle of a paper, or research, i dont know where your library is, but knowing my luck it would be 5 miles away and a blizzard when that happened... then youre stuck without the internet in your house and will have to get it the legit way anyway

hmm... I have a motherboard that broadcasts wireless to all who want it. I do it on purpose... the reason being, a woman (I forgot her name) got a case against her by the RIAA thrown out because RIAA couldn't explicitly prove it was actually her sharing music/movies because she had an open network that anybody could have pirated music on...

Not that I'm admitting to any of that tomfoolery... uh, er, shame on pirates and stuff. But yeah, I run an open network for that reason. That, and I like to share what I have! :p

Thanks for the birthday wishes. And yes, 20 today!

And I am a block away from campus, so no worries about walking 5 miles uphill in a snow storm during fall finals. :)
