Hey Guys,
I am in the middle of replacing my water pump and I have 2 questions.

First, What is holding the middle timing cover on besides the 3 bolts? I thought that was it but it will not come out at all.

Second, Can you crank the car over to loosen the crank pulley with part of the 60K done? This is my first one and I missed a very important step. I mean I have the crossover tube, DIS, belts, part of the water pump, battery tray and torque limiters removed already. Am I going to have to put the car back together more before I can get the crank bolt off?

Thanks,
Ryan

Ryan, You can do it without those things being on. The only thing you'll need is power to crank the car over. You can use a jump pack for that with no problem.

ryana83,

The middle and lower timing belt covers are bolted together with a 12mm bolt (I think). The bolt screws into a fastener attached to the lower cover (I think).

Take a mechanics mirror and examine the covers carefully. There are 8 or 9 fasteners that hold the middle and lower covers to the block. All but the one are 10mm bolts.

Some of the bolts are hard to see, so look around the covers carefully for one you missed if the covers are not free of the block.

If I remember right there are a total of 18 bolts that hold the three covers on. 9 for the top, 4 for the middle, 4 for the bottom, and the one that holds the middle and the bottom together.

The bolts are 3 or 4 different lenths to complicate matters further. The lenghts depend on how deep the bolts have to go, and the shape of the covers.

Lastly, do NOT try to force the covers off or you will crack or break them! Be patient!

Hope this helps, rangerj

PS this is from memory so I could be off one bolt!

Covers are 8mm for all of them, except the 1x 10mm on the left corner of the middle cover.

Alright, Thanks for the info guys. Where would I be without the Forum. I didn't try to mess with the middle/lower timing cover anymore, i figured that it was bolted together somewhere. I will try the starter trick to get the crank pulley off. Anything else I need to watchout for?

Thanks,
Ryan
