I know it's kind of a dumb question, and I know the heat shield faces up... but does it matter which direction that cat is installed in???

heat sheild is supposed to be down. Some cats have flow arrows on them... or labeled inlet/outlet. But unless noted, I don't think it matters.

Josh, the heat sheild goes up. Heat goes up and your car is what you're trying to protect.

As stated above, cats generally have arrows for flow direction.

Who drives regularly on the grass???

All instructions I see says heat shield up. My question is once the shield is up does it matter which way the cat is mounted?

That's exactly what my next question/answer was going to be.

Look at that cat a little. Mine have arrows to indicate flow. I have high flow cats, however, if you do not have high flow cats, it may not matter on the flow.

Cheach and Chong!!!!!!!!!!

If there's only 1 heat shield, put it between the pipe and underside of the car. Suprised that there isn't heat shields on both sides.
It would have a hard time cooling if there were heat shields on both sides. You'd be holding the heat in which probably make quick work of the honeycomb.

FWIW, I put mine on with the shields down at first (because of the grass concern) and then realized that that was backwards.

When cats first came out there were a lot of instances of people setting fields on fire by driving through tall grass. I think there've been some redesigns/re-engineering since then, but it's a legitimate concern. Caught me out as well.

But, yeah, the shields go up.
