Pulling Motor Out?

Hey guys, I have a 1992 MTX and I'm planning on starting a 3.2 conversion this spring.

I have never pulled an engine before so I don't know the steps for pulling my 3.0 out.

Can anybody tell me where to find out or just post the basic steps here on the forum. I know this might be stupid but I dont want to get everything ready and then be stuck.

What do I have to disconnect and in what order? Do I need any special tools. Do I need to have an engine hoist or will four friends and a floor jack be sufficient. I just don't know the details.

Disconect every thing. Remember how it goes back together. I always lay all the parts out in one place so I don't forget anything when I'm putting it back together.

Start by disconecting the battery, then pull the intake, disconect the fuel lines, drain the cooling system and remove it, drop the y-pipe, starter, I could go on for ever.....

The last things you disconect are the tranny to motor bolts and motor mount bolts. Once the hoist is all hooked up wink

You will need an engine hoist to pull the motor out. It will make it much easyer.

Can anybody provide the full list of things to disconnect and the order in which you disconnect them.

Also, where can I rent an engine hoist for a day for pretty cheap.

Any local heavy tool rental business should have at least one to rent. Look in the yellow pages and call around. I've even seen some on ebay for not a ton of money.

PS cooler - disconnect from subframe
wiring harnesses (leave the one that hooks to the injectors)
vac lines to the cruise
Pull the intake
halfshafts
AC Lines from compressor
radiator lines
heater hoses to firewall

I'm sure there's more, but that's what's crawling into my memory right now.

You are going to have to disconnect everything that is attached to the engine. Every cable, hose and bracket. If you have a digital camera photograph everything you disconnect and market it with tape, both matching ends.

Remove the battery, intake, all accessories, fan and radiator (just to keep it from geting banged up). Loosen the engine mounts and hold up the transmission with a bar or piece of wood. Once you separete the tranny from the engine, it will tip forward if left unsupported.

Read the service manual. It is not very difficult to do. You will need a hoist and stands or car ramps, since you will need to get under the vehicle to loosen some of the bolts. After the engine is separated from the tranny, you will need to lower the car in order to get the engine out the top.

Check out this link. This is how I did it. I purchased a cheap Chinese hoist from Northen Tools about 6 years ago. Paid under $200.00 new.

If you rent one, you willprobably need to keep it for more than one day, so expect to pay rental fees for several days. I may be wothwile to buy it.
