Planning on doing the ptu service on sat I bought a couple bottles of royal purple 75w-140. When it arrived I notice it has friction modifyer additive. Is this correct?

Most any lubricant you put into an engine/transmission these days has a friction modifier (if not several) of some sort. Good to have it in PTU fluid :)

Called the RDU *Rear Differential Unit. This fluid should also be changed, but usually lasts longer than the PTU fluid does. The PTU is under a LOT of stress mechanically. BUT, it is a good idea, if you have setup the car to do the PTU fluid change, to change the RDU fluid as well, to keep the driveline in tiptop shape, especially if you do not know the maintenance history.

BTW, the RDU fluid is differently spec'd 80w90 than the PTU 75w140, so you would have to buy that also. Both are supposed to be full synthetic from the factory. Mike (bpd1151) has had great success with Royal Purple on his '10 SHO, so I hope you will too!

Hey guys, i'm trying to avoid starting a new thread for my question.
Why are you guys changing the PTU fluid? i bought my car on tuesday, is a 2014 with 20k miles... do i need to change the PTU fluid already? i looked through the owner's manual last night and it doesn't say to change the fluid UNLESS you drive the car off road, on hot sand... I never done that with the car, nor i will ever do that... just spirited driving here and there... should i change the PTU fluid anyways?

It is a lubricant, and it breaks down and become less effective. Cheap insurance...

i get that, so is the trans fluid, motor oil, etc... but has anyone had issues with the PTU and its fluid? have people broken the PTU? not sure why people change the fluid right off the bat?

Not sure about breaking them, but this is on of many good posts on the subject:

Oh ok. Good read. Given that my car is not a PP, and so it doesn't have a cooler for the PTU... i will be changing the fluid at 30k ish. The car has 22k right now... and it drives smoother than any of my other automatic cars i have... it's insane how nice it drives. But i will be racing a few of my friends soon lol... so i think changing it at 30k miles will be wise. Thanks for the link.

Changed it out on Saturday. I used my brothers lift which is a dream (wish I had the garage height for one). We used a snapon fluid vac/pump.

The fluid was very black and did not look healthy. Lots of contamination. I am not sure I got it all out, I pulled about 1/2 of a 28 oz Gatorade bottle out of the car. The fill plugs magnet was filthy as well.

I think I will change it again in 10,000 or so miles, see what it looks like then.

Sounds right on par with the amount I've pulled out twice now...12-14 ounces each time.

Any noticeable difference after the change?

Anyone tried using AmSoil gear oil? I prefer to use AmSoil over RP usually.

I put Royal purple in last time...the recent change I used Amsoil.

15k and I'll have samples of both to test

Having some very light shuttering at low rpm in 3rd gear. reading all this I need to change my PTU fluid and check my plugs. Didn't start until I put tune on. I can't take it off now drives too nice ! I'm wondering if my plugs are way over the .30 gap for a tune. They are still stock plugs

With a tune loaded and a leaden foot, you may want to get VERY familiar with the spark plugs. Some are even fanatic enough to change them out at 10K intervals or less, YMMV, but plan on changes at least every 25-30K miles, along with the PTU fluid. RDU fluid less frequently, maybe 50K, but if you can do it along with PTU, so much the better for those boosted launches :D

You may have SP528 or SP 534 plugs in there, make sure the replacements are SP534.
